Who was Carlo Tavecchio?

Carlo Tavecchio was an Italian politician, sports executive, and administrator.

He was one of the founding members of the Polisportiva di Ponte Lambro in 1974, and he served as president of the amateur ASD Pontelambrese football team for sixteen years. Under his leadership, the club also participated in the First Category championship. His managerial career at Federcalcio began in 1987 when he was appointed director of the Lombardy Regional Committee of the National Amateur League (LND).

He later held the position of vice president of the LND for four years before being selected as the head of the same Lombardy Regional Committee in 1996. He was elected president of the LND on May 29, 1999, when his predecessor Elio Giulivi resigned as a result of the Rieti-Pomezia controversy. He started serving as the Italian Football Federation’s vice president in May 2007 and assumed the role of acting vice president in 2009.

As Advisor to the Ministry of Economy

Throughout his career, Tavecchio also served as a fiscal and fiscal advisor to the Ministry of Economy and Finance as a member of the ministerial commission at the Ministry of Health for issues connected to national plant engineering. He also has expertise in youth and amateur football, as well as artificial turf fields, for the two years between 2002 and 2004, and he has been a member of the Commission for amateur and youth football since 2007 after being nominated by UEFA.

In addition, he writes the book “I’ll tell you about football,” which he decided to dedicate to his niece Giorgia, to teach children about football.

President of the FIGC

Tavecchio stood for president of the FIGC with the backing of 18 Serie A clubs in the summer of 2014, following the retirement of Giancarlo Abete and the nation’s exit from the World Cup in Brazil. His campaign, however, loses support due to a statement made on July 25, of that same year, at the Amateur League’s summer assembly, that was deemed disrespectful to players from outside the European Union.

While the presidents of the Leagues A, B, and Pro Beretta, Abodi, and Macalli defend him and downplay the relevance of his comments, the presidents of Assocalciatori and Assoallenatori Tommasi and Ulivieri questioned his eligibility for the position of federal president.

Controversies

FIFA requested the FIGC launch an investigation into the incident on July 28, 2014, enlisting the help of its Task Force against Discrimination and European official Dennis Abbott. Tavecchio’s detractors also bring up his earlier statements that spark disagreements and conflicts, and in response, Tavecchio’s supporters speak up in his favour. Among them are Gigi Riva, who cites his ongoing commitment to unity and inclusion, Adriano Galliani, who rejects the charge of racism and urges people not to place undue emphasis on a bad judgement, Marco Tardelli, who claims the charge of racism is a smokescreen for an attempt to thwart his election, and Enrico Preziosi, who accuses those who attacked Tavecchio of false moralising.

Tavecchio defeated Demetrio Albertini to become the FIGC’s next president on August 11, 2014, receiving 63.63% of the vote. With the support of Lega A, Lega D, AIAC, and AIA, he won 54.03% of the vote to defeat Andrea Abodi (45.97%) and be re-elected president of the FIGC on March 6. He was named Lega Serie A commissioner on April 21 of the same year. He resigned from his position as president of the FIGC on November 20, 2017, after the Italian national team was unable to earn a spot in the 2018 World Cup. He asked the other members of the federal council to follow suit, but none of them agreed to do so.
