During the Hafey period, Craig Stewart, also known to teammates as “Snaggles,” was a good football player who contributed at both ends of the field in more than 100 games. Keep reading to know more about Craig Stewart and his cause of death in detail.

Who was Craig Stewart?

Australian rules football player Craig Stewart competed in the Victorian Football League (VFL) for the Collingwood Football Club and Richmond Football Club. James Stewart, a player for the Essendon Football Club, is his son. Stewart made his VFA debut with Preston, where he led the league in goal-kicking in 1976 and won the league’s “best and fairest” title in 1977.

After winning Preston’s best-and-fairest in the VFA the year before, Stewart joined the team in 1978. He had a significant effect in his debut season, winning both Best debut Year Player and Best Local Recruit awards.

He was brought in as a key forward and had some fantastic performances in that capacity, but he also made some excellent use of his time in defense and in the ruck. He was frequently moved around to fill in where we needed him, sometimes at the expense of his performance.

But things were different in 1978. He remained throughout the preseason, performed admirably in the exhibition games, and was selected at center half-forward for the season opener against Geelong. The following week, he faced one of football’s most difficult opponents in Ron Andrews of Essendon.

On his way to receiving almost universal best-on-ground ratings, Stewart took 11 marks, had 21 possessions, kicked four goals, and led “Rotten Ronnie” in a merry dance all day. The magpies thought a new star had come into the world.

Coach Tom Hafey said afterwards:

“he’s a readymade League footballer. He’s a beauty.”

One critic wrote:

“Andrews had no answer to Stewart’s strong marking and ground play. His long kicking is a delight to watch and he is also a good team man. Always willing to give a handball to a player running past, Craig really has been a find for Collingwood.”

Even though Craig twice scored six goals in a single game—against St. Kilda in 1979 and Footscray in 1980—he was nevertheless an underappreciated member of Tommy Hafey’s illustrious squads.

In addition to being a member of the losing Grand Final teams in 1980 and 1981, he placed third in the best-and-fairest in both 1980 and 1982. In 1980, he also participated in a Victorian B team.

Before getting caught up in the trade battles with Richmond and moving to Punt Road in 1984, he played 115 games overall for the black-and-white, scoring 122 goals (one of which was only recently added to his revised career total). In three seasons with the Tigers, he would play 35 more games, bringing his career total to 150.

Although Craig didn’t finish up taking home any League honours that year, he did win Collingwood’s Best First Year Player and Best Local Recruit trophies, solidifying his place in the Hafey’s Heroes era.

He was brought in as a key forward and had some fantastic performances in that capacity, but he also made some excellent use of his time in defense and in the ruck. He was frequently moved around to fill in where we needed him, sometimes at the expense of his performance.

With a height of 193 cm and a weight of less than 100 kg, he was a huge guy, yet he was nonetheless agile for his size. Nevertheless, his kicking and marking were his best qualities.
