Cronulla Shelly Beach tragedy: What happened?
After being rescued from the sea at Cronulla on Saturday afternoon, one man passed away and two other swimmers were taken to the hospital.
Around 1.50 pm, emergency personnel was summoned to Shelly Beach after a group of six people encountered trouble. Two jet skis were deployed, one from the Sydney branch and the other from the Sutherland branch, according to a Surf Lifesaving NSW spokesperson.
Just after 2 PM, two unconscious guys were discovered in the sea by the surf lifeguards on the jet skis, who each transported one patient to shore. While they waited for rescuers, they performed CPR on both men, but one of them passed away right away.
A third man, said to be in his 20s, was also rescued and sent to the same hospital in stable condition. The second unconscious man, in his 40s, was also taken to St George Hospital.
Although the area was searched by the Westpac helicopter, no further people were discovered in the water. Jackson Towns, the duty officer for SLS NSW, stated that the event happened at an unpatrolled area of the beach and that the surf conditions at the time were rough.
Sutherland Shire Police Area Command officers were investigating and will write a report for the coroner. The drowning on Saturday comes only three days after an unconscious man was recovered from the ocean at Crescent Head and nine days after a 45-year-old father drowned while attempting to save his daughter from the waves at Lennox Head. It has been a heartbreaking month on NSW beaches.
