Who is Kevin Monahan? Man charged with murder after fatally shooting Kaylin Gillis

According to officials, 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis was shot and killed by New York homeowner Kevin Monahan after the car in which she was a passenger unintentionally drove onto his driveway. Let’s see about it in detail.

Who is Kevin Monahan?

Homeowner Kevin Monahan of New York was charged with murder on Monday in the murder of Kaylin Gillis, 20, who was in a car that accidentally drove into his driveway, according to authorities.

The woman, who was travelling with three pals, never got out of the car on Saturday night, according to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy.

They were about to turn around after realizing their mistake when Kevin Monahan, 65, of Hebron, New York, walked out of his home and fired at least two bullets at the automobile, according to the sheriff.

Kaylin Gillis, 20, was hit by one of the bullets, and the gang travelled approximately six miles to a nearby town before calling 911, according to Sheriff Murphy. Ms. Gillis was attended to by emergency personnel who attempted to save her life, but the sheriff said that she was later declared dead.

The death of Ms. Gillis, who resided in Schuylerville, New York, roughly 20 miles from the scene of the shooting, was characterized by Sheriff Murphy as “very sad.” He asserted that he knew “for a fact that she comes from a good family” and that this was true.

The sheriff said

“She was an innocent young girl who was out with friends looking for another friend’s house,”

“Unfortunately, they drove up this driveway.”

Sheriff Murphy stated that Mr. Monahan was being held in a local jail and will likely make an appearance before a county court judge “shortly.”

Mr Monahan’s attorney, Kurt Mausert, said that his client had no prior convictions, owned a contracting business, and had lived in Washington County for 30 years.

Mr. Mausert said,

“My preliminary view of this case is that it was a series of errors which resulted in a tragedy,”

“It is too soon to say more than that.”

When officers arrived, Monahan, who Murphy described as a laborer and a longtime occupant of the house, was uncooperative, according to the sheriff.

Murphy claimed that Monahan had not provided any information to the authorities on his motivation for opening fire.

What happened?

According to Sheriff Murphy, the incident happened late on Saturday in a part of Washington County that is roughly 60 miles northeast of Albany and has numerous dirt roads that are poorly lit and have poor lighting, as well as minimal mobile or internet access.

According to Sheriff Murphy, the 911 call concerning a potential shooting victim in Salem, New York, was received by dispatchers at around 9:30 p.m. According to Sheriff Murphy, they also got 911 calls at around the same time reporting gunfire on the street where Mr. Monahan resides.

The sheriff claimed that Mr. Monahan was mute and refused to exit the residence when police arrived. After approximately an hour, the sheriff reported that he had been brought into custody.

Sheriff Murphy declined to comment on the type of firearm used by Mr. Monahan or whether any more firearms had been discovered at the residence. He emphasised that Mr. Monahan started the fire before anyone got out of the automobile.

Sheriff Murphy stated:

“There was no reason for Mr. Monahan to feel threatened, especially as it appears the car was leaving.”

He continued by saying he was unaware of any communication between the passengers and Monahan. The car was only in the driveway “for a very short time,” according to him, and nobody got out. Additionally, it happens frequently for cars in the region to turn into the incorrect property.

In the 2020 census, Hebron, a steep farming community hidden in the Adirondack Mountains, recorded a population of 1,786.

Kaylin Gillis’ Family statement:

Gillis’s friends and her grieving family were still in shock at the tragic shooting with a pistol.

Gillis, who Chuchay Stark, 48, has known since she was a little child, was described as “really a gentle soul” by Chuchay Stark to The Post. She cried when her daughter informed her of Gillis’ passing.

Stark explained,

“She was one of those kids who make you say, ‘I wish she was my kid.’ She was very attuned to people’s needs and feelings,”

“But there was no lack of confidence. She knew what she wanted. She knew her voice, and wasn’t afraid to be creative.”

“In a small town, everybody is your children. Not being a family member, it’s still devastating. I can only imagine how heartbroken Angel and Andy are,” she stated, referring to Gillis’ parents.

Gillis’ cousin Eustis referred to her as the “goofball of the group.”

Eustis said,

“She was very creative and would love to play these games where she’d make something out of nothing.”

Another Similar incident:

The circumstances of Ms. Gillis’s death mirrored those of a shooting involving a Black girl who was shot twice by a white homeowner in Kansas City, Missouri, a few days previously, after accidentally ringing the wrong doorbell.

According to Ralph Yarl’s family and attorneys, the 16-year-old suffered a bullet wound to the head in the incident and is currently in critical condition. They claimed that he had gone to the wrong home, which was approximately a block away, while en route to pick up his younger twin brothers from a friend’s house.

The homeowner involved in the incident was first freed after being detained for 24 hours and had no charges brought against him; this decision sparked outrage. The guy, Andrew D. Lester, was accused of assault in the first degree on Monday. Both Ms. Gillis and Mr. Monahan are white in the Washington County shooting.

Authorities are currently looking into Kaylin Gillis’s death circumstances, which are yet unclear. The news has obviously crushed Kaylin Gillis’s family and friends, and the community has been horrified by the tragic loss.
