Brazilian jazz-funk group Azymuth was established in 1973. The founding members of the group were Ivan Conti on drums and percussion, Alex Malheiros on bass and guitar, and the late Jose Roberto Bertrami on keyboards. They put out a lot of albums for Milestone Records between 1979 and 1988.

In 1979, they also had a big smash song with “Jazz Carnival,” which was taken from their Light as a Feather album. In January 1980, the UK Singles Chart saw it reach its peak at position 19. They have been established in Brazil since the mid-1990s and have released records on the Far Out Recordings label in London. They also continue to perform on European tour dates.

The Human Factor (Milestone, 1984), one of Ivan “Mamo” Conti’s solo albums, has been released. As “Jackson-Conti,” Conti and hip-hop artist Madlib released the album Sujinho in 2008.

Many people expressed their profound sympathies to his family and expressed how much they loved him. The news of this occurrence has upset his supporters and fans.

Gilles Peterson wrote: “RIP to the great Mamao. Shocked to hear of Ivan Conti’s passing overnight. He was behind a multitude of stone cold classics that dominate our collections… but more than anything he was the pulse of the great @azymuthoficial …. Jazz Carnival and beyond… my true entry point to Brazilian music… Joe Davis @farout_recordings was talking to him about the next European tour last night.. the band never stopped operating and he was super excited as usual to be playing gigs in Europe. Mamao was also a very active participant in progressing musician’s rights and he became a rock for countless musicians. He will be dearly missed.”

Rafeal Baratta wrote : “Very sad with the news of Master Ivan Conti Mamão . His drumming was one of a kind Within seconds we already knew who the drummer was. When I was 14 years old I was invited by the pianist HelioCelso to participate in his album Sonho Carioca. This was my “debut” in the world of CDs. And next to me was Mamão. I recorded half of the album with Paulo Russo and he recorded the other half with Jorge Helder with whom I continued recording and playing in various projects to this day. Mummy you are a reference 🙏. Your legacy will be honored For me and many of his fans. Spent all week listening to Emilio Santiago ft Azymuth… what a thing… and what an honor ❤️ May God have him 🙏🙏 Strength To The Family ❤️”
