The Westminster Kennel Club is in mourning following the demise of Chairman David “Dave” Helming on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

Who was Dave Helming?

Dave Helming was an honorary member and past president of the Newfoundland Club of America (NCA). He has held the position of NCA delegate to the American Kennel Club and served as vice chairman of the NCA Charitable Trust Management Board.

He belonged to the Somerset Hills Kennel Club, Westchester Kennel Club, Kennel Club of Philadelphia, and Morris & Essex Kennel Club in addition to the Westminster Kennel Club.

He has performed a number of services for these clubs, including those of president, director, show chairman, and treasurer. Helming was a participant in the AKC Political Action Committee and an AKC-approved judge for Newfoundlands and Junior Showmanship. Helming, a retired senior manager from the Public Service Enterprise Group, spent 38 years in a variety of top managerial roles.

The “Pouch Cove” kennel, run by Dave Helming and his wife Peggy, breeds Newfoundlands, Portuguese Water Dogs, and Norwich Terriers. They received the honor of being named the AKC Breeder of the Year in 2005 after being named the Working Group Breeder of the Year in 2001.

On August 30,2023, David “Dave” Helming, the chairman of the Westminster Kennel Club, passed away unexpectedly following a brief lung cancer illness.

The terrible news had been confirmed by the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Facebook.

The club wrote,

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share the news that Dave Helming, our Show Chairman, Club Secretary, and Friend, passed away last evening after a brief bout with lung cancer. This is a tremendous loss for his wife, Peggy, his kennel, his friends, the fancy, and the many clubs he assisted including WKC.
Our 148th show will be dedicated to Dave.
Arrangements will be private. He would want us to remember him with a smile. Let’s all do our part to continue his legacy in the Sport we all love.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has lost one of its most powerful chairman and a good friend. The new golden age in Westminster Kennel Club history will always be associated with Dave Helming’s legacy. He leaves behind his wife Peggy, his kennel, his friends, the fancy, and the numerous groups he supported, especially the Westminster Kennel Club.
