Svenne” Hedlund: Who was he?

Swedish pop singer Sven Ove “Svenne” Hedlund lived from 1 March 1945 to 3 December 2022. He belonged to the musical ensemble Idolerna.

In the 1960s, he sang with the Swedish bands Clifftones and Hep Stars. They created the pair Svenne and Lotta (also known as “Sven and Charlotte” in some countries) the following year after singer Charlotte Walker (born in 1944) joined the group in 1968. The couple was wed from 1969 until their divorce in 2014

HEP STARS

Played together with Benny Andersson

Sven “Svenne” Hedlund was one of the most loved Swedish pop stars of the 60s and the band Hep Stars, where among others ABBA’s Benny Andersson was a member for a period. The band’s biggest hit was “Cadillac”.

Abbas Björn Ulvaeus participated directly in TV4’s “News morning” when the news was that Sven Hedlund had passed away. I knew him well, so it is very heavy. But I had no idea he was bad.

In 1966, Svenne Hedlund met the American singer Charlotte Walker, a former member of The Sherrys, and they became a couple. Two years later, Walker joined the Hep Stars. They both later continued as the duo Svenne and Lotta and performed, among other things, in the Melodifestivalen in 1975 with the song “Bang en boomerang” and later as an interlude in 2005.

The Hep Stars

Swedish rock group The Hep Stars was established in Stockholm in 1963. The band was the most popular English-language performing group from the 1960s Swedish pop scene in 1965–1966.

Outside of the Nordic region, the band is best recognized for serving as a stepping stone for keyboardist and songwriter Benny Andersson, who later found success with ABBA on a global scale.

The group was started by the bassist Lennart “Lelle” Hegland and the guitarist-singer Jan “Janne” Frisk, along with the keyboardist Hans stlund and the drummer Christer “Chrille” Pettersson (3 November 1942 – 27 August 2006). (29 November 1943).

Hegland, Pettersson, Frisk, Sven Ove “Svenne” Hedlund on lead vocals (10 March 1945, Solna), and Benny Andersson on keyboards made up the line-up at the height of their fame.

Widespread success & Breakup:

The Swedish version of “Last Night I Had A Strangest Dream,” “I Natt Jag Drömde,” was a huge hit there but, because it is a folk song, it caused some friction within the band. Rock-oriented fans were similarly confused by it. Up to 200 shows were still played by the band in 1967.

However, issues occurred when the backup organization did a poor job dealing with the tax authorities and managing the business in general. Around the same time, beginning at the end of the 1960s, the nation’s overall economic status began to stagnate.

Together, they pressured the band to find their way into the showband scene and a larger audience. Charlotte Walker, an American singer, joined in 1968. This action was in conflict, particularly with Frisk, who was ultimately asked to depart in the early months of 1969 due to waning interest.

The Hootenanny Singers’ Björn Ulvaeus entered. After completing the tour commitments, the band decided to call it quits due to conflicting emotions caused by the departure of the original member.

After the band’s final performance in August 1969, Andersson, Ulvaeus, Walker, and Hedlund left the group. Hegland was the only original member left when it finally disbanded in the early 1970s after going through multiple lineup changes.
