Paul Peter Patrick McNaughton was born on 18 November 1952 and he is from Dublin, Ireland. He was a player of rugby union, soccer, and GAA player in Ireland throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He also served as the Irish Rugby Team’s manager from 2008 to 2011.

With Leinster, Ireland, Chicago Lions, Los Angeles Rugby Club, Greystones, and Wanderers, he participated in rugby as a center. He played soccer for Shelbourne and Bray Wanderers A.F.C. despite being more well-known as a rugby player.

Paul McNaughton career:

Paul McNaughton played regularly for the Leinster Rugby team. He made considerable improvements after concentrating on the oval ball game and earned his Ireland debut at center against Scotland in a 12-9 victory over Scotland in 1978.

Paul was educated at St. Kevin’s in Greystones, McNaughton represented Wicklow in minor-level hurling in addition to playing Gaelic football for Bray Emmets. However, soccer and rugby soon took over.

McNaughton played for Bray Wanderers, then in the Leinster Senior League, before moving to Shelbourne, then in the League of Ireland. He lined out in two FAI Cup finals in 1973 and 1975 and also participated in the UEFA Cup.

He was a Greystones club rugby player when Leinster initially chose him, and the following year, in the 12-9 Five Nations triumph over Scotland, he earned his first Irish cap.

Over the following three years, McNaughton, a center, played 15 times for Ireland, receiving his final cap against France in the 1981 Five Nations.

McNaughton played a significant role in Ireland’s successful tour of Australia in 1979, starting at inside center in both tests of the series’ 2-0 victory that would be the team’s last over the Wallabies until 2002.

McNaughton represented Wicklow GAA in both senior football and minor hurling, making him the only person to play three sports in Ireland’s national stadiums and adding to his long list of athletic accomplishments.

During his professional career, he went on to manage Wicklow. From 2009 to 2011, he also served as Ireland’s manager under Declan Kidney. After that, he presided over Greystone RFC. In 2018, he was inducted into the Leinster Rugby Hall of Fame.

He also worked as a member of the backroom staff during the 2009 Grand Slam campaign. In 2018, McNaughton was inducted into the Leinster Rugby Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife Jean and sons Conor, Cormac, and Cian.
