Who was Datuk Pang Chin?
Datuk Pang Chin Hin is the founder of our beloved Mamee Monster snacks.
He was a visionary who created a number of our favorite treats, such as the well-known Mamee Monster, Mister Potato chips, Double Decker shrimp crackers, Mamee and Mamee Chef instant noodles, among others.
“Titan” Pang Chin
Pang Chin has been running the business for 51 years and is widely regarded as a titan in the regional food industry. Datuk Pang leaves behind his wife and six children: three boys, three daughters, and their respective offspring. Due to his long and productive life, he was able to watch his family grow into five generations, all of whom resided in the same house as him until his death.
Pang also frequently donated to charity, concentrating on problems related to community and educational development.
His family has promised to contribute all the money raised at the burial from well-wishers to the Melaka Pay Fong Secondary School, Melaka Malim Primary School, and the Melaka Hainan Association Education Scholarship to ensure that his philanthropic spirit would continue to live on.
A legacy left behind
The Pang family inherits his business empire in snack foods. He also leaves behind the business he started from scratch, together with his three sons, three daughters, and several grandkids.

Tan Sri Pang Tee Chew, his son, later rose to the positions of director and CEO at the business. Pierre Pang, his grandson, currently serves as Group CEO.
Mamee Monster Brand
Pang has been running the business since it was established in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, in 1971.
Datuk Pang began his career as an entrepreneur as a used car salesperson, but in 1971 he and his business partner founded Pacific Food Products and erected a small facility in Melaka.
This was his first foray into the food production industry. Unfortunately, Lucky Instant Noodles and Vermicelli, the company’s first offering, failed to find popularity.
From Failure to Success
However, despite the initial failure, he continued to innovate. According to an interview given by Tan Sri Pang Tee Chew, son of Datuk Pang Chin Hin, to Tech In Asia, Datuk Pang decided to create an instant noodle snack based upon the same premise and gave it the name MAMEE Monster.
He was inspired by rubber tapper laborers whom he observed eating raw instant noodles sprinkled with its seasoning sachet.
After his son, Tee Chew came up with the concept of selling pre-made, instant noodles with flavor, Pang established the well-known Mamee noodle snack in 1974.
In the 1980s, it eventually became the most popular instant noodle in Malaysia.
For the name, Tan Sri Pang is said to have ordered wonton noodles and requested a double serving, using the Cantonese word “孖面” pronounced “ma-min.”
The items they produce are shown in the following picture:
Stepping into snack Industry
The enormous popularity allowed the company to expand further into the snack industry. The company would later change its name to MAMEE-DOUBLE DECKER (M) Sdn Bhd in 1992 and start selling a wide variety of other snack items.
This includes products from the equally well-known Double Decker brand, the Mister Potato potato chip line, and the MAMEE instant noodle line.
The Pang family takes satisfaction in working hard to create “healthy” products, according to a recent South China Morning Post article.
They emphasized that, unlike some of their rivals, Mamee utilizes only real chicken stock for seasoning and doesn’t include any wax in their products.
Mamee has created more than 50 brands of snacks over 51 years, including Double Decker, Mister Potato, Monster snack noodles, and other quick noodles.
The success of MAMEE DOUBLE DECKER has been acknowledged by numerous awards given out in the industry, including the Frost & Sullivan Award for Best Home-Grown Packages Food Company and the Putra Brand Award in the Foodstuff Category as one of the Top 10 Instant Noodle brands globally, to name a few.
In 2016, the late Datuk Pang also received the Putra Brand Personality Award. Additionally, the business was acknowledged as one of Malaysia’s Best Managed Companies in 2022 by the global professional services network Deloitte.
The Edge reports that their top export destinations in 2010 were Australia and Singapore, which helped them generate RM428 million in sales.
Mamee remained strong during the worldwide recession that hit the world in 2007–2008.
The Star reports that their company’s FY08 profit was RM23.60 million on RM396.96 million in revenue, an increase from their FY07 profit of RM14 million on RM359.74 million.
Collaboration with Manchester United
From 2011 through 2014, they collaborated with Mister Potato and Manchester United, earning one of their most prominent international accolades.
Growing each other’s potential to become billionaires was the shared goal of this relationship.
Given their focus in Asia, MU sought to earn US$1 billion through an IPO in Singapore, and at the time, Mamee sought to reach annual revenue of RM 1 billion in 5 years.
Strategy behind the Victory
One of Mamee’s directors, Vuitton Pang, highlighted that having a strong distribution network is essential for business success.
Even if a company produces the best product on the planet, it cannot realize its full potential if it is unable to reach the most remote reaches of the market.
Every time they grow to a new nation, they choose reliable distributors and partners to collaborate with.
“They are the key. Without distribution, all the money spent on branding goes to waste,” according to Vuitton.
Still popular 51 years later
Despite being primarily known for Mamee noodles, Mamee-Double Decker is still running strong in many places today.
Singaporeans and Malaysians have a special place in their hearts for this iconic snack after 51 years of manufacture since a crackling bite instantly takes us back to our childhood.
Fans may see how the well-known noodle snack is prepared at Mamee’s concept store, Mamee Jonker House, which she opened in Melaka in 2015. They can also shop there and eat in their café.
Now that Mamee brand items are shipped to countries throughout the world, including the Americas, Europe, Africa, and more, it has a global presence.
May one of the country’s most popular treats serve as a living tribute to Datuk Pang.
We send Pang’s friends and family our sincere condolences as we are devastated to see another Tycoon pass away.
