Nicole’s Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis was made public earlier this year. “Yesterday I got a feeling that had been dormant in me – or rather in us – a name. The memories in Nicole’s head will fade forever, they will disappear in the mists of the advancing time.”

It was also disclosed in August 2021 that Nicole had developed cancer once more.” It is very difficult at the moment. But we have to get through this,” the article at the time in Het Nieuwsblad read.

“Nicole is responding very well to the drugs. And luckily she is not in pain,” Hugo added. “This time the cancer is on the bones. To be clear, it’s not bone cancer, it’s breast cancer that has moved to the bones. At the last checkup, the cancer cells had “fallen asleep” as they say. So we hope it stays that way.”

Nicole had previously received cancer diagnoses in 2005 and 2012. This was the third time she had experienced the disease.

Who is Nicole Josy?

Nicole Van Palm, sometimes known as Nicole Josy, was born in Wemmel, in central Belgium, on October 21, 1946. She made her stage debut at the Brussels Folies Bergère at the tender age of 3. When she was 14 years old, Nicole Josy became her stage name.

Alongside fellow future Belgian Eurovision participants Ann Christy, Lily Castel, and Jacques Raymond, Nicole was one of the winning artists at the European Cup for Vocal Recitation in Knokke in 1968. She performed “La Nouvelle-Orléans” in the same year’s Belgian national final for Eurovision. She produced 20 tracks on her own.

Nicole meet Hugo

Nicole and Hugo Sigal began their musical and romantic partnership after meeting in 1970. The pair were picked to represent Belgium at the 1971 Eurovision with their song “Goeiemorgen, morgen.” Nicole became unwell with jaundice just before their trip to Dublin. Lily Castel and Jacques Raymond, who placed 14th overall, took the pair’s position. Even now, the song’s original rendition is a hit in Flanders.

In December 1971, Nicole Van Pamel weds Hugo under the artist name Nicole Josy, which she adopted at the age of 14. It is the beginning of a prosperous relationship that will last both in their personal life and on stage as Nicole & Hugo. Last year, Nicole added, “Our secret was to settle things before we went to sleep, after we had a fight.”

Representing Belgium in an contest

Nicole and Hugo eventually had the chance to go as Belgium’s representatives in 1973. They gave a performance of “Baby, baby” and came in last. Regardless of the outcome, the song became popular in Flanders and was noteworthy because of the costumes and dancing routine.

The pair sang “Baby baby” in their original stage attire in 2005 at “Congratulations: 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest,” the competition’s 50th-anniversary celebration in Copenhagen.

Nicole and Hugo played on cruise ships all around the world for the majority of the 1980s. They received a medal from the Belgian Authors Society SABAM on October 20, 1990, in recognition of their services to the Flemish entertainment sector.

With “Love is All Around,” Nicole and Hugo hoped to once more represent Belgium in 2004. They almost missed making it to the final by placing second in the first semi-final.

Awards Won by Nicole and Hugo

Nicole and Hugo took part in Zo is er maar één, a VRT cover song competition, in 2008. With their rendition of the Liesbeth List and Ramses Shaffy song “Pastorale,” they took home the trophy.

The song by Nicole and Hugo was the top-charting single in Flanders and the 2008 Radio 2 Zomerhit. They subsequently won a prize for best song in the Dutch language at Radio 2 Zomerhit 2012 with “Schietgebed.”

Until they started providing full-time care for Nicole’s mother Lucienne in 2016, Nicole and Hugo performed together. Early in 2021, just a few weeks away from turning 100, Lucienne passed away.

Couple’s Interview

The pair revealed to Primo in October that Nicole’s condition altered daily. “Sometimes nothing seems to be wrong, but other times her memory completely fails her.” They continued to have plans. For instance, a trip to Saint-Tropez or a trip to Seefeld for winter sports. Nicole had declared at the time, “We’re going to take advantage as long as we can”.

In 2014, the couple stated  that they would stop touring 2015. “Too bad, but Nicole doesn’t like it anymore”,  Hugo stated.“ She still likes to perform, but the trips, all those phone calls. No, our Colleke has had it with all that hassle. She can’t take that anymore.”

Even without Nicole, Hugo continued to work in the entertainment industry. She traveled everywhere with her hubby.

The group continued to perform until 2015 and was well-known in Belgium.

We send Nicole’s friends and family our sincere condolences as we are devastated to see another Eurovision legend pass away.
