“Castleford Tigers are saddened to learn about the passing of legendary player Kevin Beardmore, aged 62.”

“One-half of the iconic Beardmore Twins alongside brother Bob, Kevin was an uncompromising front-rower, plying his trade in the hooker position. With his signature taped-up headband, ‘Gripper’ was an all-action style player who always caught the eye and will be fondly remembered in our club history as one of Castleford’s greatest number nines,” it added.

The statement also says, “A proud local player, Kevin joined Cas from a strong Fryston community team in 1977 and developed in our system before making his senior debut against York in January 1980. Over the next twelve years, he would go on to make 247 club appearances, scoring 80 tries in the process. As part of one of the most famous Castleford teams of all time in 1986, Kevin has etched his name in the club’s history winning the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley, but also in that memorable year he was the Man of the Match in the Yorkshire Cup Final too.”

“As an outstanding talent Kevin represented Great Britain fourteen times from 1984 through to 1990, he also picked up one cap for England and played for Yorkshire on three occasions. In their infancy, NRL side Canberra Raiders were impressed by what they saw of Beardmore during the 1984 Britain tour and invited the hooker to play during the 1985 season. Everyone at Castleford Tigers would like to send their deepest condolences to the Beardmore family at this very sad time.”

Kevin is an English professional rugby league player, and he competed in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. He played as a hooker or prop, or a number 9, 8, or 10, for Castleford (Heritage No. 611), Great Britain, England, and Yorkshire at the representative level.

He played almost 250 games for Castleford. While a student at Castleford, Kevin Beardmore earned caps for Great Britain in 1984 against New Zealand, in 1987 against France in two matches, in 1988 against France in two matches, Papua New Guinea, France in two matches, and New Zealand, in 1989 against France in two matches, and in 1990 against France in two matches. Beardmore traveled with the Great Britain Lions on their 1988 tour of Australasia.

While a student at Castleford, Kevin Beardmore earned caps for Yorkshire and participated as a hooker in the 16-10 triumph over Lancashire at Wigan’s stadium, the 24-14 victory over Lancashire at Leeds’ Stadium on September 21, 1988, and the 56-12 victory over Lancashire.

Performances in Challenge Cup Finals:

On May 3, 1986, at Wembley Stadium in London, Kevin Beardmore played hooker in Castleford’s 15–14 victory over Hull Kingston Rovers in the 1986 Challenge Cup Final.

Kevin Beardmore played hooker in Castleford’s 18-22 loss to Hull Kingston Rovers in the 1986 Yorkshire County Cup Final during the 1986–87 season at Headingley Rugby Stadium, Leeds on October 27, 1986. He then played hooker, scored two tries, and was named man of the match while Castleford defeated Hull F.C. 31–24 in the same match on October 11, 1986, claiming the White Rose Trophy. Kevin played hooker in the 12-33 defeat by Leeds in the 1988 Yorkshire County Cup Final during the 1988–89 season at Elland Road, Leeds on16 October 1988.
