After a brief illness, Littlefield High School’s football coach passes away. Let’s discuss how he died and Jimmy Thomas cause of death in detail below.
What happened to Jimmy Thomas?
The Littlefield community is in grief over the passing of Jimmy Thomas, the head football coach and athletic director for Littlefield ISD.
Littlefield ISD Superintendent Mike Read freed the following statement:
It is with great sadness that I report that Littlefield ISD Athletic Director/Head Varsity Football Coach, Jimmy Thomas, passed away this morning following a brief illness. The entire Littlefield community is grieved by this unexpected loss, and words cannot express the grief we feel about the loss of Coach Thomas.
Coach Thomas was a great leader for the LISD sports programs, and he served as an inspiring role model to the student-athletes of Littlefield ISD. Although he constantly strove to create winning athletic programs at LISD, he worked equally hard to use those programs to build students of good character.
His presence will be hugely missed by the District’s students, his fellow teachers and coaches, and the entire Littlefield school community. We extend our deepest condolences to Coach Thomas’ family and encourage everyone to provide support to them in their time of painful loss.
The District appreciates the Littlefield community’s continued support for Coach Thomas’ family, and we ask you to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Jimmy Thomas cause of death
Jimmy Thomas, the head football coach and athletic director for Littlefield, passed away unexpectedly on Monday morning after announcing his hospitalization on Sunday evening.
“I enjoy going through hardships and dealing with things I don’t fully comprehend, even though this was undoubtedly the most terrible day of my life. I think God is working on his plan now after hearing my prayer from yesterday. I appreciate all of your good thoughts and prayers “On Twitter, Thomas said something citing Jeremiah 29:11.
Thomas stated earlier this week, bilateral blood clots in both lungs forced him into the hospital. Thomas is the second head football coach of a high school in the area to pass away in the past week. Matt Hoover, the head football coach at Anton, passed away unexpectedly at the start of November.
Thomas’s Littlefield Career
The Avalanche-Journal said that Thomas has been Littlefield’s head football coach and AD since last year at the time of his hire in February 2021.
The Littlefield Wildcats break with tradition by hiring Jimmy Thomas, a former Bushland coach. After learning that he had made the finalist list for the position, Thomas said, “They’ve had a lot of tradition, and I’m going, to be honest.” I feel both honored and somewhat humbled to have been selected to head this initiative.
According to A-J records, the Fritch native and West Texas A&M alumnus guided the Bushland Falcons to a 47-25 record over six seasons. This included reaching the Class 4A Division II state quarterfinals in 2017 and finishing with a 12-1 record in the Class 3A Division I regional round in 2019.
In June 2020, Thomas gave up his post as head football coach at Bushland and accepted a managerial position at Channing. Because there was no football at the high school, Thomas’ Friday night light hole went unfilled for 16 of his 24 years as head coach. He earlier told the A-J that it only took him a semester to realize how much he missed the competition.
When Thomas was hired at Littlefield, his youngest son Jason, who had just graduated from Bushland in 2019, was enrolled at Texas Tech, and his in-laws resided in Clovis, New Mexico, so the opportunity at Littlefield was a case of timing being ideal.
Then, Thomas reflected, “I guess this was all part of God’s plan.” “When it comes to coaching, I can assure you that I won’t take anything for granted. Man, I’m excited. I suppose that was probably just a ruse to ease us in.
