Hickman also worked as an anchor on YES Network in New York, ESPN, and FOX Sports. Hickman’s church confirmed the sad news of Hickman’s death. Fred Hickman cause of death was not revealed yet.

In the early 1980s, CNN Sports anchors Fred Hickman and Nick Charles established themselves as regulars on many screens in America. Even before we had access to YouTube, some of us possessed the CNN Sports: Play of the Day VHS, which included a selection of incredible sports footage.

The news that Hickman had died at the age of 66 broke on Wednesday night, causing a tremendous loss for the sports media community.

Additionally, he worked for YES Network, Fox Sports South, and several regional networks. Hickman was the managing editor and an anchor for Black News Channel at the time of his passing. There is no official news about Fred Hickman cause of death.

Who is Fred Hickman?

Fred Hickman was born on October 17, 1956. He was born and raised in Springfield, Illinois, attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated in 1978. In 1980, he became a founding co-host of the CNN programme Sports Tonight. In 1989 and 1993, he was given CableACE awards, and in 2004 he won a New York Sports Emmy.

Hickman was brought up by his parents, George Henry and Louise Winifred. He attended Springfield Southeast High School before graduating in 1974. From 1974 to 1978, he studied at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he received a B.S. in sociology. During his time there, he worked for the low-power KCOE-FM radio station.

Hickman and Nick Charles co-anchored “Sports Tonight” for over 3,000 episodes in two stints beginning in 1980. “How have Nick and I stayed together for so long?” I guess because I don’t go home,” Hickman told Sports Illustrated in 1994.

Fred Hickman Career

Hickman started his professional radio broadcasting career as a news anchor at KLWW-AM in Cedar Rapids. After graduating from Coe College, Hickman relocated to Springfield, Illinois to work at the radio station WFMB-AM, where he was in charge of playing country music. In February 1978, at the age of 22. Hickman started his professional television broadcasting career as an anchor and sports director of the Springfield television station WICS-TV.

TBS and CNN

As part of a four-person sports department for the firm’s Cable News Network CNN, Hickman joined the new cable television business Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1980. He collaborated with Nick Charles in this role.

As hosts of CNN Sports Tonight, a weekly sports wrap-up program where Hickman and Charles covered scores and happenings, aired highlights from collegiate and professional games, and chose a “Play of the Day,” the pair debuted on television on June 1, 1980.

The program was ESPN’s SportsCenter’s nightly competition, which Hickman eventually joined. Hickman briefly left CNN in 1984 to work as a sports anchor for Detroit, Michigan’s WDIV, an NBC affiliate. He worked as a reporter and presenter for the MLB’s Detroit Tigers, and as a boxing specialist from June 1984 to May 1985.

He returned to TBS in November 1986 to co-anchor CNN/Sports Illustrated with Nick Charles. He worked for CNN until September 2001, doing pre-and post-game shows for the NBA and NFL, commentating on the Atlanta Hawks, and serving as co-host of the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France.

YES Network

Hickman relocated from Atlanta to New York City in October 2001 to work on the YES Network, which launched in 2002. He served as their first host of the pre-and post-game shows for New York Yankees broadcasts.

ESPN

After finishing two NBA seasons and three baseball seasons with the YES network in late 2004, Hickman departed to work for ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut. Through his tenure, he hosted ESPN’s flagship shows, including SportsCenter, Baseball Tonight, ESPN Classic, NBA Shoot Around, and NBA Coast to Coast.
