Big Pokey, a well-known rapper, passed away on June 18, 2023, while performing in Beaumont, Texas. His death has made headlines, and people are now very interested in learning about his life. The following article explores his life, cause of death, and net worth in detail.
Who was Big Pokey?
American rapper Milton Powell, well known by his stage moniker Big Pokey, was from Houston, Texas. Pokey, one of the founding members of the Screwed Up Click, was known for his chop-and-screw style of music.
His mother and father, who raised him, encouraged him to follow any job path he was interested in. He was drawn to athletics as a child and thought it was difficult to concentrate on his academics.
He went to Jack Yates High School despite having no interest in education. He attended Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, after graduating, where he played football and was a member of teams that won the district and the national championships.
Music Career
Powell started treating his music career seriously after graduating from college because he decided to pursue a career as a professional rapper. He entered the recording space and got to work on his debut mixtape. His perseverance paid out in the end, and on May 18, 1999, Chevis Entertainment released Hardest Pit in the Litter, his debut studio album as a solo artist. He couldn’t believe he could release an album despite having no prior professional experience.
Early in the 1990s, Houston producer DJ Screw and Big Pokey started collaborating on songs that appeared on several of DJ Screw’s mixtapes. Big Pokey was a featured artist on DJ Screw’s “June 27th Freestyle” mixtape, which went on to become an important work in chopped and screwed hip hop.
Below is a list of a few of his mixtapes:
- 2003: Mob 4 Life (with Chris Ward)
- 2004: A Bad Azz Mix Tape Vol. 3

‘Screwed Up Click’ or S.U.C
The Screwed Up Click (also known as S.U.C.) is a Houston, Texas-based hip-hop collective that was founded by DJ Screw. The Botany Boyz, DJ Screw, Big Hawk, Big Mello, Big Moe, Big Pokey, E.S.G., Fat Pat, Lil’ Flip, Lil’ Keke, Lil’ O, and Z-Ro are some of its most well-known members.
Big Pokey was a founding member of the Screwed Up Click. He teamed up with DJ Screw at the beginning of the 1990s, and he began putting tracks on all of DJ Screw’s mixtapes. “Hardest Pit in the Litter,” his debut full-length album, was released at the beginning of 1999. The fact that it peaked at No. 72 on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart makes the release even more unbelievable.
With “D-Game” 2000, Pokey made a comeback the following year. This album of mid-tempo 808-driven beats featured several of his Houston peers as guests.
On the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, the 18-track album’s peak position was at position 71. The US Billboard Independent Albums chart saw it reach a high position of No. 31 as well. It was obvious that Big Pokey was a breakthrough performer after these two consecutive successes. He jumped right back into the studio after the album marketing and touring.
2001 -2005
He worked with the Wreckshop Wolfpack on Tha Collabo in 2001, and he subsequently released another solo album, Da Sky’s Da Limit, in 2002. His least popular album to date, it peaked at No. 74 on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. He decided to record a solo album for his subsequent release.
Big Pokey’s third studio album was released on August 6, 2002, through Wreckshop Records. The 20-track album succeeded better than any of his prior releases, peaking at No. 47 on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It reached record sales and received a tonne of overwhelmingly favourable fan comments.
Mob 4 Life, Powell and Chris Ward’s second joint album was released in 2003. His fans found the album to be popular, although it was the first to not reach the top of any charts. His fourth studio album, The Best Of II: 8ighted & Chopped, was released on March 16th, 2004.
Similar to the last album, this one did not reach the top of the charts but did well in terms of sales. Mob 4-Life: Chopped-N-Slowed, his fifth studio album, was released less than a year later. Fans gave the 17-track album a 5-star rating, although it once more failed to chart.
He appeared with Paul Wall in the song Sittin’ Sidewayz, which peaked at number 93 on the US Top 100 in 2005. Later, he released numerous other albums and mixtapes.
2006-2008
Powell took the following 12 months to recover and rejuvenate after working continuously for the previous six years without a break. In 2006, he was back in the studio making his upcoming album.
The massive 34-track album Flow Masters Volume 1: The Blast Off was released on April 2nd, 2007. Even though it was a solo album, Chalie Boy, Ryno, Magno, Paul Wall, Max Minelli, and Yungstar collaborated on many of the songs.
Big Pokey managed to squeeze in two additional albums for release in 2008 despite the time he spent promoting the album through touring, interviews, and performances. At this stage of his career, his persistence began to emerge as he refused to slow down.
On July 22nd, 2008, Koch Records released Evacuation Notice, another solo album. The 12-track album received a 65% RapReviews rating and reached No. 75 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. He released a 12-track solo album, Keep on Stackin 3-Screwed, as a surprise to his followers on December 2nd, 2008. His career’s busiest and most prosperous year was 2008, according to him.
2021
Although Big Pokey’s career seemed unstoppable, he took a vacation in 2009. He returned to the studio eight years later, ready to crank out a tonne more hit records. The solo album Sensei, with 13 tracks, was published on May 28th, 2021. On August 27, 2021, he pleasantly surprised his followers with a spinoff album. His most recent album, Sensei (Slowed & Chopped), feat. DJ Red, was a 13-track instant hit with his fans and left them wanting more.
