The 2023 Spa 24 Hours had the FRECA race as a supplementary race. Just before the Kemmel straight, near the Raidillon exit, a multi-car collision took place.

There were five drivers involved in all, and two of them suffered injuries. Tim Tramnitz, Adam Fitzgerald, Joshua Dufek, and Enzo Scionti were also involved in the multi-car collision. Entering the Kemmel straight, Van ‘t Hoff became uncontrollable. Fitzgerald then struck him with his car’s side.

His passing was verified by a formal announcement from the racing circuit, which stated as follows:

“Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine sadly announces the death of MP Motorsport driver Dilano Van ‘T Hoff. The incident happened during Spa-Francorchamps race two.

“We want to express our sincere condolences to the team, family and friends. Royal Automobile Club of Belgium, the Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps and SRO Motorsports Group join Alpine and ACI in expressing their sincerest condolences to the driver’s team, family and friends.”

Following Van ‘T Hoff’s passing, the 24 Hours of Spa event confirmed that all pre-race entertainment activities had been cancelled. Additionally, a minute of silence would be observed before to the start of the race in honor of the 18-year-old’s memory.

“Everyone associated with the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa is devastated by the news that Formula Regional EU by Alpine driver Dilano van ‘T Hoff lost his life in an accident during this morning’s race.

We express our deepest condolences to his family, friends and MP Motorsport.

All startline entertainments for the 24 Hours of Spa have been cancelled and there will be a minute’s silence before the start of the race to honour the memory of Dilano.”

At the Austrian Grand Prix, a moment of silence was also observed before to the start of the Formula 2 sprint race. This might occur in Formula 1 shortly as well.

Since 2021, Van ‘t Hoff, who began racing in karts, has represented MP Motorsport in the Alpine Formula regional European Championship. In the championship, the Dutchman finished fifteenth. The skilled driver won the Spanish Formula 4 championship two years ago.

Who was Dilano van ‘t Hoff?

Dilano van ‘t Hoff was a Dutch racing driver. He won the Spanish F4 Championship in 2021.

At the age of eleven, Van ‘t Hoff entered his first international karting competition, the SKUSA SuperNationals.

In 2018, the same year he finished sixth in his debut season of the European Championship, the Dutchman placed third in both the IAME Euro Series and IAME International Final. He finished fifth in the same competition the following year, but this time in the OK class, and he and Forza Racing won the Trofeo delle Industrie.

Van ‘t Hoff made his single-seater debut in the 2021 Formula 4 UAE Championship with Xcel Motorsport. His season started off to a good start since, despite stalling at the start of the first race, the Dutch driver was able to finish second and went on to win the two races that followed, both of which he started from pole position.

Van ‘t Hoff signed MP Motorsport in the F4 Spanish Championship for his primary campaign. Van ‘t Hoff’s first two victories came at the series’ opening race at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, and he then embarked on a run of six consecutive podium finishes, including three victories and a triple podium at Algarve.

After the first-place finisher, Daniel Macia received a penalty for exceeding track limits, he went on to win the sprint race at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo. He then finished third in the third race. Van ‘t Hoff won the championship after completing a triple trick of pole positions and victories at the season’s penultimate event.

Formula Regional European Championship

Van ‘t Hoff made his Formula Regional European Championship debut in September 2021 by competing as a guest driver for MP Motorsport on the Circuit Ricardo Tormo.

Van ‘t Hoff raced with MP Motorsport throughout the whole 2022 Formula Regional European Championship season.

MP Motorsport decided to stick with Van ‘t Hoff through the 2023 campaign. Following an incident in Round 8 at Spa-Francorchamps, he passed away on July 1st.

Reason for accident: What happened?

The crash happened in an unexpected location on the Spa circuit’s final lap following a restart from a safety-car scenario on a wet track. Van’t Hoff was struck laterally by Adam Fitzgerald after losing control of his vehicle in the swift right-hander that leads into the Kemmel straight.

The 18-year-old Dilano Van’t Hoff did not survive. He was unable to recover from the horrible side hit he sustained in race 2 of the Formula Regional European by Alpine at Spa.

The Dutch MP Motorsport driver was flown to the closest hospital, where he was discovered to be dead. The Formula Regional European by Alpine, which had never had to record such a horrific occurrence, is hit hard by this drama that occurs in the world of motorsport.

The fact that the race had already concluded and that restarting it for just one lap in the weather circumstances might have been avoided has now become the subject of criticism.

Sadly, the dynamics are exactly the same as what happened in 2019, a few meters earlier at the top of the Raidillon, when Anthoine Hubert lost his life while competing in an F2 race after being struck in the side by a car after crashing into the barriers and being stopped by Juan Manuel Correa.
