Following a shootout at midday today, a Selma police officer was shot and died, and the suspect was in custody.
On Tuesday, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of gunfire close to Mitchell Street and Pine Street.
Around 11:45 a.m., an officer was flagged down in the 2600 block of Pine Street, according to Selma Police. According to reports, a California police officer was shot and killed in Selma, close to an elementary school.
When the police approached the suspected person at that point—who has not yet been identified—he was shot multiple times.
The suspect fled the scene of the shooting, according to authorities. Officers responded, performed life-saving measures, and then rushed the injured officer to Community Regional Medical Center for care.
According to a Tuesday night update from the police, the cop later passed away from his wounds at the hospital, and the suspect is now in custody.

Suspect’s Criminal history:
Law enforcement is familiar with the suspect, according to the authorities, who also note that he has a criminal history, including arrests for robbery and possession of a firearm.
The suspect has served time in prison and is currently on probation under California’s AB 109 law, the sheriff’s office reports (prison realignment).
Just a few streets from the shooting location, Eric White Elementary School experienced a brief lockdown as a result of the incident.
