Selma shooting:

Following a shootout at midday today, a Selma police officer was shot and died, and the suspect was in custody.

On Tuesday, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of gunfire close to Mitchell Street and Pine Street.

Around 11:45 a.m., an officer was flagged down in the 2600 block of Pine Street, according to Selma Police. According to reports, a California police officer was shot and killed in Selma, close to an elementary school.

When the police approached the suspected person at that point—who has not yet been identified—he was shot multiple times.

The suspect fled the scene of the shooting, according to authorities. Officers responded, performed life-saving measures, and then rushed the injured officer to Community Regional Medical Center for care.

According to a Tuesday night update from the police, the cop later passed away from his wounds at the hospital, and the suspect is now in custody.

The officers’ identity has not yet been made public since the family is requesting privacy at this time.

What happened?

According to officials, various agencies responded to the report. A deputy from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office spotted the suspect before taking him into custody.

The U.S. Marshals Service and the California Highway Patrol were among the law enforcement organizations that responded to the shooting in an effort to discover the suspect, who was apprehended a short distance away by a deputy with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators also discovered a handgun in the vicinity where the shooting occurred. Officer who died served in the department for about two years, according to the authorities.

Who is the suspect?

Police said a 23-year-old male was later found, detained, and a gun thought to have been used in the shooting was found and seized nearby.

The shooting suspect was detained, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, the agency in charge of the investigations. The name of the suspect was disclosed yet.

“I’m outraged. I am horrified right now,” Selma Police Chief Rudy Alcaraz during a press conference.

Sheriff John Zanoni of Fresno County stated that the shooting’s motivation was under investigation, but may have been gang-related..

Suspect’s Criminal history:

Law enforcement is familiar with the suspect, according to the authorities, who also note that he has a criminal history, including arrests for robbery and possession of a firearm.

The suspect has served time in prison and is currently on probation under California’s AB 109 law, the sheriff’s office reports (prison realignment).

Just a few streets from the shooting location, Eric White Elementary School experienced a brief lockdown as a result of the incident.

Following the release of the lockdown, authorities reported that parents had to pick up their students from the school.

The shooting on Tuesday came only weeks after the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in Southern California lost two deputies in two separate shootings.
