Mike McSweeney: Who was he?

Among his many other achievements, Michael was a pioneer in the development of the BODYPUMP program. He also contributed to the development of RPM and BODYATTACK.

Tens of thousands of people who have since disseminated a fitness and healthy living philosophy around the world were trained and inspired by the man.

Michael is an excellent person in addition to that. He continues to be involved in the health and fitness industry and resides in Hong Kong with his wife Mary and two sons.

Although not all of them are as accomplished, the health and fitness sector is made up of many people like Mike McSweeney. They changed so many people’s lives and continue to do so.

Body Pump

One of the many workshops created by Les Mills, a New Zealand-based corporation, is BODYPUMP. The GRIT series, RPM, SH’BAM, BODYCOMBAT, BODYJAM, BODYATTACK, BODYSTEP, BODYVIVE, and BODYVIVE are more courses.

Over 15,000 clubs and gyms in more than 80 countries offer sessions, which are instructed by roughly 100,000 licensed instructors (Les Mills, 2013).

One of the fundamental tenets of the Les Mills programs is that participants join something greater than themselves when exercising. Participants are welcome to join Les Mills in its quest to “build a fitter globe” and are encouraged to do so.

The organization’s culture encourages inspiration, vigor, and good health and takes pleasure in bravery, much like the culture of New Zealand.

Members of the Les Mills organization refer to themselves as “One Tribe,” which indicates that they are all striving to make the world a fitter place. They see their courage, inspiration, and fervor for the future of fitness as what binds them together.

A traditional Maori haka is a native tribal war dance from the indigenous New Zealand Maori people. It is frequently performed at ceremonies and as a welcome, challenge, or celebration. The Les Mills Tribe is a group of fitness warriors who have even developed their potent warrior call based on this dance (Les Mills, 2013).

The premier kapa haka expert in New Zealand produced the Les Mills haka, which conveys a strong message about how One Tribe must unite to fight obesity and inactive lives.

Too sad to hear this bad news! Mike was 1 sacred Fitness Legend, 1 incredible ‘Difference Maker’ in our learning of the ‘Rep Effect’ which, just like you, every quarter, I was looking forward to the last VHS of this Body Pump that he embodied so well in the early 2000s to help implement and develop this discipline with the very invested ‘Team France’.

Corie Rudisill

I’m so sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. He was incredible! I trained for my Body Pump certification off release #42. Mike had an energy and presence like no other in delivering and yes, performing Body Pump. He made it an experience, was so much fun, and shaped my way of instructing with every release. My deepest condolences to his friends and family

Mike was my Body Attack mentor/trainer at Les Mills Akl decades ago before the international success of LM. I was equal parts in awe and terrified of him but he always got the best of us! Such a legend, a great man, friend, and mentor to many. I am so very sorry to learn of his untimely passing and my thoughts are with Mary, their boys, and everyone else who held him, dear. R.I.P

I’m incredibly shocked and saddened to learn of Mikes passing – what an incredible legacy he has gifted the world. I have so many amazing memories of our time together – from NZ, Brazil, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and sitting on a beach in Whakatane. Incredible athlete, human, husband, father, and friend. 💔

As a fledgling instructor starting out in the mid to late 90s Mike was an incredible influence on my career and one of the first real “Rockstar” instructors a very sad loss and my thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
