Who was Kevin Cunningham?

Kevin Cunningham was a member of Australia’s first Paralympic Games Team.

He went to Perth Technical College as well as Jolimont School. At SW Hart & Company, he started an apprenticeship. He was injured by a T-Model Ford in a traffic collision in 1957.   For three weeks, he was unconscious. Shenton Park Rehabilitation Center started the process of resettling him. He got married to Shenton Park Rehabilitation Center nurse Maureen in 1966.

Paralympic Games

When Cunningham worked at Shenton Park Rehabilitation Center, he saw residents preparing for the International Stoke Mandeville Games, which sparked his interest in Paralympic sports. He competed in wheelchair basketball and fencing in the 1960 Rome Olympics. Due to an injury sustained during selection trials in Adelaide, he was not chosen for the 1964 Tokyo Games.

He competed in wheelchair basketball and men’s slalom C in the 1968 Tel Aviv Games. In both of these competitions, Cunningham took home silver medals. In 2010, as the Paralympic Games marked its 50th anniversary, Cunningham was recognized for his participation in the 1960 wheelchair basketball team from Australia, which also included Kevin Coombs, Gary Hooper, Bill Mather-Brown, Bruno Moretti, and Chris O’Brian.

Commonwealth Paraplegic Games

Cunningham took part in three Commonwealth Paraplegic Games. He participated in various events in the 1962 Perth Olympics and took home gold in the pentathlon and men’s wheelchair basketball. He earned two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals in basketball and track and field competitions at the Kingston Games in 1966. He participated in the 1970 Paralympics in Edinburgh, Scotland, before quitting the sport.
