What happened to Masato Kudo?
Masato Kudo, a striker for Tegevajaro Miyazaki of the J. League’s third division, passed away on Friday as a result of complications after brain surgery.
The 32-year-old, who with Kashiwa Reysol between 2011 and 2013 won Japan’s three main club championships, was admitted to the hospital earlier this month after being given the diagnosis with hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the head.
Kudo was admitted to intensive care on Tuesday after his condition worsened following surgery on October 11. Tegevajaro made the announcement.

Masato Kudo’s Career
The native of Tokyo graduated from Kashiwa’s renowned youth program and joined the first team in 2009. He contributed seven goals to the Nelsinho Baptista-managed team that won the 2011 J. League top division after scoring 10 goals during the club’s J2 winning promotional run.
Kudo became a fan favorite among the Reysol faithful with to his excellent tactical awareness and strong finishing abilities. His output grew with 13 goals in 2012, the year he took over the No. 9 jersey from star striker Hideaki Kitajima, and 19 in 2013.
He still has 56 goals, making him the club’s J1-highest scorer. As a member of the Japan side that won the EAFF East Asian Cup in Seoul in the summer of 2013, he made his debut for his country.
In the fall of that year, Kudo won the J. League Nabisco Cup MVP award after leading Reysol to a 1-0 victory over Urawa Reds with the game-winning goal. President of the Japan Football Association Kozo Tashima said in a statement, “I’d taken notice of him when he was trained by Tatsuma Yoshida (current manager of Ventforet Kofu) at Kashiwa’s youth team. “I’ll never forget the bravery he displayed in helping us win the East Asian Cup for the first time.
“It is awful for a current player to die, and I am speechless when I consider how his loved ones, teammates, and fans must be feeling.” Kudo’s first overseas test came in 2016 when he joined the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer. He had a good start there, but in May of that year, he suffered a devastating injury when he collided with an opponent goalkeeper, breaking his jaw and causing a concussion.
Masato Kudo was a “great person, I cannot believe my old comrade has passed away,” former Whitecaps goalie David Ousted tweeted on Friday. “My sympathies go out to his family. Indeed a terrible day.”
In 2017, Kudo returned to Japan. He spent two seasons with Sanfrecce Hiroshima of the J1 league, making 30 league appearances while scoring just four goals. In 2019, Kudo signed a loan deal with Renofa Yamaguchi of the second tier.
His arrival to Tegevajaro this winter after his second international stint with Australia’s Brisbane Roar during the 2020–21 A-League season. Before the start of the J. League YBC Levain Cup final between Sanfrecce and Cerezo Osaka on Saturday at Tokyo’s National Stadium, a moment of silence was observed in Kudo’s honor.
Yoshikazu Nonomura, the chairman of the J. League, issued a statement saying, “I am speechless by this news. Everyone at his former clubs and the entire soccer community is in astonishment and sadness right now. Kudo is survived by his 3-year-old daughter and his wife of eight years.
