Al Bemiller cause of death
Former Buffalo Bill, Al Bemiller passed away this morning. He played college football at Syracuse University and for the Buffalo Bills (1961-1969). He was a member of two AFL Championship teams with the Bills and was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Hall of Fame in 2015.
Some sources informed Al suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease for many years. Though his family members did not reveal any cause of death for Bemiller.
Who is Al Bemiller?
Al Bemiller, one of Buffalo’s AFL players with the longest career, passed away on Wednesday. Bemiller, who manned the pivot on the Bills’ offensive line for nine seasons between 1961 and 1969, was very literally at the core of Buffalo’s American Football League back-to-back championship teams.
Bemiller, a 1961 seventh-round selection of the Bills, was also selected by the NFL’s St. Louis Cardinals, but he signed with Buffalo for two reasons. First, it was closer to his hometown of Hanover, Pennsylvania, and second, a beginning job was guaranteed.
Bemiller did secure the starting position at center right out of his first training camp; he retained it for the following nine seasons, playing in 126 games with 123 starts.
AFL All-Star recognition
His two AFL championships in 1964 and 1965, which also helped him win AFL All-Star recognition in 1965, were the pinnacle of his professional career.
Ben Schwartzwalder, the head football coach at Syracuse University, encouraged him to join the football team after initially recruiting him for his wrestling prowess.
As a starter on the Syracuse offensive line by his sophomore year, Bemiller had excellent success as the then-Orangemen won the national championship that year (1959).
Bemiller continued to live in Western New York and worked as the recreation director at Wyoming Correctional Facility after leaving the Bills. In addition, he ran several companies, including a club in Hamburg. Bemiller went on to become St. Francis high school in Athol Springs highly successful wrestling coach.
Bemiller, who was given the job in 1978, guided the Red Raiders to three straight Catholic High School Athletic Association championships. He also worked as a football and wrestling official for Western New York schools.
He received the coveted Ralph C. Wilson Distinguished Service Award in 2013 for his dedication to Western New York after his playing career. In 2015, he was also admitted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. Bemiller, 84, had been an active member of the Buffalo Bills Alumni Association for many years.

Lived next door to him in the early 60s….My Mom never watched football before knowing him & one day she asked him why he always had a towel stuffed in the back of his uniform……he told her it was because he had a hole in his pants ….she offered to sew them for him!

He actually came to my parent’s home when I was a kid. He shot the basketball around in our driveway. Mom and Dad were into politics in the 70s.
