Archbishop Emeritus Sheehan, a revered spiritual leader, was born on July 9, 1939, in Wichita, Kansas, United States. He was the son of John Edward and Mildred (Jarboe) Sheehan.
Michael committed his life to the service of God and his community, leaving an everlasting impact on the hearts of all who knew him. He was ordained by Auxiliary Bishop Filippo Pocci on July 12, 1964, in Rome, Italy, for the Diocese of Dallas.
On September 21, 1993, he was consecrated as the eleventh Archbishop of Santa Fe, and he retired on June 4, 2015.
Archbishop Emeritus Sheehan worked for eliminating poverty, advancing equality, and protecting the welfare of society’s most defenseless people. He was given the name Apostolic on June 17, 2003.
He served as Phoenix’s administrator until December 20, 2003, and from November 12, 2003, to December 1, 2006, he served as the Secretary of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
