Alex David Smallwoods, a 17-year-old passenger who died in a two-vehicle crash in Co Londonderry, has been named officially. Keep reading to know more about Alex Smallwoods death in detail.

 

Alex Smallwoods death: What happened?

According to the authorities, two vehicles were involved in the incident that occurred in Co Londonderry on Sunday, May 28, 2023. Furthermore, the deadly collision occurred on the A6 Glenshane Road near Dungiven around 4:20 a.m. on Sunday.

Concerning the deceased, his name was Alex Smallwoods, and he was 17 years old. On Sunday morning, the underage student was driving a Vauxhall Corsa when it collided with a Vauxhall Insignia on the A6 Glenshane Road.

Following the collision, two more persons were brought to the hospital for treatment.

The Ambulance Service stated in a statement: “Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, two patients were transported to Altnagelvin Area Hospital by ambulance.”

 

Who was Alex Smallwoods?

According to sources, Alex Smallwoods, a former member of the Foyle College school community, died in a sad accident. The youngster also belonged to the Brigade Cricket Club and the Institute Football Club.

Alex reportedly started at Foyle College in September 2017 as an enthusiastic Year 8, where he made long-lasting friendships with his peers. He was also active in local sporting clubs, including the Brigade Cricket Club and the Institute Football Club, and had a strong interest in agriculture and farming. He was a cricket fan and hence played for the Brigade Cricket Club.

 

Alex Smallwoods cause of death

According to a PSNI spokesperson, “Emergency services attended and provided medical treatment,” which indicates that the teenage driver was discovered injured by the police who dialled 911.

According to a funeral notice, the teen passed away unexpectedly as a result of a car accident.

It read,

“Adored son of Stewart and Sara, much loved big brother of Hannah, cherished grandson of Elsie, Annie and Billy,”

“Very deeply regretted and will be lovingly remembered by his entire family circle.

“Now the labourer’s task is over.”

Alex Smallwoods’ death was apparently caused by the injuries he acquired in the accident. He was Sara and Stewart’s treasured son, as well as Hannah’s older brother. Alex’s grandparents Billy, Annie, and Elise also survive him.

Police called for information and said their investigations into the collision, which occurred on May 28 at around 4.20 am, are still open.

The spokesperson further added, “Our investigation is underway and we are appealing to anyone who was on Glenshane Road around this time and who has dash-cam footage, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101.”

Since then, the road has been reopened, and police have issued an appeal for any witnesses to call detectives at 101.

Following the teen’s passing, condolences have been pouring in on social media.

“The Foyle College community is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our recent school leaver, Alex Smallwoods. To his family, friends and teammates, we extend our deepest sympathies on their profound loss. We hold each of you in our thoughts and hearts in the days ahead. ”

Eglinton Primary School wrote: “Words cannot adequately express the depth of sorrow we feel for our dear former school secretary, Sara and her family, on the tragic loss of their beloved son, Alex. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family during this incredibly difficult time. We hope that they can find some comfort and solace in the midst of this heartbreaking loss. With deepest sympathy, Eglinton Primary School.”

Brigade Cricket Club wrote: “Everyone at the club has been left devastated at the news that 17yr old Alex Smallwoods lost his life in a road traffic collision yesterday. Alex was an extremely popular young player at our club and will be sorely missed by his many friends. He had come through all the various youth teams in recent years and had progressed to play in our 2nds and 3rds on a regular basis. Always seen with a smile on his face, and with a love and enthusiasm for cricket, Alex was always a pleasure to have in the team. Our thoughts and prayers are with his mum and dad Sara & Stewart, his sister Hannah and the entire family circle at this very difficult time.”

Other Crash incidents:

As a result of several crashes that occurred on Sunday around Northern Ireland, seven persons were hospitalised. The collision on Glenshane Road left two the people hurt. Three ambulance teams were sent, according to the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), and two patients were brought to Londonderry’s Altnagelvin Hospital.

For the majority of the day, the Glenshane Road was shut down in both directions; however, it was reopened on Sunday night. Following a different crash in Newcastle, a man in his 40s is in critical condition.

Before 3 a.m., a car struck a pedestrian on Castlewellan Road. He was then transferred to the hospital, where he is now in critical but stable condition. Following a further collision between a car and a motorbike on the same road, an additional two people were sent to the hospital.

Around 10.22 am, the Air Ambulance was called to the scene. A patient was flown to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, while another was transported by ambulance to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.

Following a two-vehicle collision on Ballygowan Road in Comber, Co. Down, two additional people were taken to the hospital. The most of the afternoon afterward was spent with the route closed as emergency personnel responded to the situation.
