Virginia State Police reported on Saturday night that a man from Maryland had been detained and accused in connection with the murder of M. Christopher Wagner II, a Wintergreen Police officer. Barmak is being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. Here’s what we know everything about the suspect Daniel Barmak.

Virginia State Police (VSP) says 23-year-old Daniel M. Barmak, from Towson, MD was charged with the following:
- Capital murder
- Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
- Two felony counts of malicious wounding
The Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail is where Barmak is being kept. According to police, Barmak assaulted two other adult males at a home on Arrowood Lane, and Wagner was called to the scene.
The two males, both aged 23, fled the house on foot and were subsequently both taken to UVA Medical Centre for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds.
What happened between the suspect and the police officer?
Barmak and Wagner met in the woods. Virginia State Police claim that during their battle over Wagner’s department-issued weapon, Barmak shot and killed the officer.
According to the police, Barmak was also shot during the altercation. As per the news release from the Virginia State Police, Barmak was apprehended without additional incident by Wintergreen Police and the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office.
Barmak was taken to UVA Medical Centre for treatment of an incident-related non-life-threatening injury. According to the news release, police discovered Wagner’s work-issued firearm at the scene of the incident. The Office of the Medical Examiner has received Wagner’s remains for examination and autopsy.
The Appomattox Field Office of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident at the request of Wintergreen Police Chief Dennis Russell.
The Nelson County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office statement:
We are working with the Virginia State Police during the ongoing criminal investigation. We extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Officer Wagner’s family, the Wintergreen Police Department, and the Wintergreen community. The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office is committed to pursuing a just and legal resolution to this case.”
According to the press release, the Office of the Medical Examiner has received Wagner’s remains for inspection and an autopsy.
As of 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, funds from a fundraiser that the Wintergreen Police Department posted on its Facebook page had brought in $16,530 for Wagner’s family.
