Sad news was released from the Golden Kamuy TV anime’s development today, with the notification that one of the show’s key crew members passed away on November 1st.

Golden Kamayu anime series

Japanese manga author and illustrator Satoru Noda created the Golden Kamuy series (Japanese: Hepburn: Gruden Kamui).

From August 2014 to April 2022, it was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump, a seinen manga publication.

Thirty-one tank-bon volumes of the collected chapters were published.

Story plot

The plot centers on Saichi Sugimoto, a veteran of the Russo-Japanese War who is helping a young Asirpa, an Ainu girl, on his mission to locate a vast gold hoard belonging to the Ainu people.

Hiroshi Nakagawa, an expert in the Ainu language and a professor at Chiba University, is in charge of the story’s use of the Ainu language.

Anime’s License

From April to December 2018, Geno Studio’s adaptation of an anime television series was broadcast.

In 2020, a third season ran from October to December. In October 2022, the fourth season, which Brain’s Base produced, debuted.

It has been announced that a live-action movie will be made.

Since 2016, Viz Media has acquired the rights to publish manga in English. Crunchyroll and Funimation hold the anime’s license.

Sales

As of April 2018, five million copies of Golden Kamuy were in print. Volume 7 was ranked seventh on the Oricon Japanese Comics Rankings for the week of April 18–24, 2016.

Ten million copies of the manga were in circulation as of June 2019, over 17 million copies as of August 2021, over 18 million copies as of December 2021,and more than 22 million copies as of June 2022.

Awards

Golden Kamuy won the 9th Manga Taish award in 2016;it was nominated for the 20th and 21st Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes in 2016 and 2017;it won the 22nd Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2018 in the Grand Prize category;

it was also nominated for the 40th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category; and for an Eisner Award for the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia. It came in second a reading list for males.

The series also earned the Grand Prize at the 51st Japan Cartoonists Association Awards in 2022. In 2021, it won the Social Impact Award at the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival.

Author Satoru Noda

Satoru Noda is a Japanese manga artist (Japanese:, Hepburn: Noda Satoru). Hokkaido, Japan’s Kitahiroshima is the birthplace of Noda.

Noda named the main character of his manga series Golden Kamuy after his great-grandfather, a soldier of the Russo-Japanese War who had settled in Hokkaido.

Career beginning

At the age of 23, he relocated to Tokyo and began working as an artist assistant.

With the one-shot Kyoko-san no Kyto in Ky (“Kyoko-Bad san’s Day”) published in Monthly Young Magazine [jp], he made his debut as a manga artist in 2003.

Gr wa Mae Shika Mukanai (“The Goalie Always Faces Front”), his second one-shot story, earned a Tetsuya Chiba Award [ja] in the Young Artist category in 2006.

Commercial Failure

After nearly ten years of serving as an artist’s assistant, Noda made his debut in a serialized manga in 2011 with Supinamarada!, which was published in Weekly Young Jump.

Supinamarada! was a commercial disaster, thus Noda took a year off before creating his next series, Golden Kamuy, which debuted in 2014.

Restarting “Supinamarada!”

The show gained great acclaim and economic success, winning the Manga Taish Award in 2016 and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Award in 2018.

When Golden Kamuy came to an end in 2022, Noda declared he would restart Supinamarada!

Private life

The details of Noda’s private life are obscure.Although he has a website and participates in press conferences to discuss his work, he avoids making public appearances.

When he won the Manga Taish in 2016, his editor accepted the prize while Noda gave an audio-only acceptance speech.
