The incident occurred at the Spring Park Plaza, which houses a Petco and an Office Depot among other shops, before 4:30 p.m. The center is located in a busy area of Denham Springs, not far from I-12.

Walker claimed that the suspect then left the area. He said, “One of my officers is in critical condition at the hospital.”

At the press conference, Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard revealed that deputies had stopped the car at a different location. In the previous exchange, Roberts was shot, and he was transferred to a nearby hospital.

According to officials, Cpl. Shawn Kelly of the Denham Springs Police Department was shot many times and is currently in serious condition.

Sheriff Jason Ard  reported that Roberts passed away at the hospital as a result of his wounds.

What happened?

Officers were first sent to the center after receiving reports of an incident in the Petco parking lot, according to Denham Springs police chief Roger Walker, speaking at a press conference after the shooting.

Walker claimed that as soon as the cops came, Roberts started firing at them, hitting one of them repeatedly. In a viral video from the immediate aftermath of the gunshot, three cops, including one in plain clothes, are shown huddling over the injured officer and giving him chest compressions next to a Denham Springs police car.

Roberts ran away from the scene in a car, but Livingston Parish Sheriff’s officers quickly caught up with him and fired and wounded him. Roberts and the cop were both sent to the hospital in serious condition.

After the press conference, Sheriff’s spokesperson Lori Steele stated that the event police responded to was an argument between Roberts and a lady.

Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard said,

“We just ask that you say prayers for this Denham Springs police officer, and for everybody involved,”

“I know there’s a lot of questions. Everybody’s got questions about this.”

Prayers to Cpl. Shawn Kelly

A large number of law enforcement officers gathered together in prayer before Ard’s news appearance at the scene, several of them sobbing and lifting their hands. Friday at 8 a.m., Denham Springs police organized a blood drive at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital on Essen Lane for the wounded officer.

Before a planned meeting of the Livingston Parish Council, District 4 Councilman John Wascom, who represents the Denham Springs neighborhood where the shooting occurred, stated that he had just learned about the incident. He asked the reader to remember the officer in her prayers just before the invocation. She prayed that God would “lift the officer” and his loved ones.

A significant number of law enforcement agencies, including the sheriff’s office, Denham Springs Police, Louisiana State Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, were present at the scene of the incident.

As of 8 p.m., according to Ard, deputies were still on the site investigating, in part because of nearby thunderstorms.
