Smith’s fitness instructors saw right away that he was having a serious medical issue, and they swiftly took him out of the search maze to start CPR. BCFES staff members started doing CPR and implementing advanced cardiac life support techniques right away. The choice was made to use the BCFES’ on-site ALS ambulance, which was on standby for training, to transport Smith to Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center.

First responders gave him CPR for more than an hour, and although they were able to restore his heartbeat at the hospital, Smith’s sister claimed that he coded multiple times before passing away.

Smith’s sister stated that he has two children: a son who is 13 years old and a 22-year-old who he adopted. She told 11Alive that she wants the general public to understand that the Bartow County fire department has been the “biggest blessing” and that they are not at fault for what occurred.

She wrote,

“I have never met so many people that genuinely love someone like they do,”

“This was clearly God’s way. Everybody kept telling us it could not have been a better scenario because EMS was on scene already, since they were training.”
