Firefighter Matthew Smith, 41, of Bartow County passed away as a result of “complications” that occurred during a training session. The agency reported that Matthew Smith passed away on March 16 at 5 p.m. from “complications of an apparent medical episode” while he was in training.

“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of one of our own, Firefighter Matthew Smith. Matt passed away yesterday afternoon around 1700 hours, from complications of an apparent medical incident that he suffered during a training exercise last Thursday. We will pass along arrangements as they become available. Please keep the Smith family and our department in your prayers during this difficult time.”

Training Exercise Tragedy: Matthew Smith Cause of death
According to a statement from the Bartow County Fire and Rescue Services office, firefighter Matthew Smith, 41, passed away on Tuesday “after consequences of an apparent medical issue that he received during a training exercise last Thursday.” Smith “become unresponsive during a search and rescue training exercise at the Bartow-Cartersville Fire Joint Training Center,” the organization writes in an expanded notice.
Smith’s fitness instructors saw right away that he was having a serious medical issue, and they swiftly took him out of the search maze to start CPR. BCFES staff members started doing CPR and implementing advanced cardiac life support techniques right away. The choice was made to use the BCFES’ on-site ALS ambulance, which was on standby for training, to transport Smith to Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center.
Smith was revived by emergency responders and emergency room professionals who worked nonstop. He did recover cardiac function, and he was kept on life support for six days.
Smith’s sister claims that he collapsed during the training drill just before 11 a.m. when his heart stopped beating. She wrote to Kaitlyn Ross at 11Alive to explain that her brother had been without oxygen for four minutes. First responders gave him CPR for more than an hour, and although they were able to restore his heartbeat at the hospital, Smith’s sister claimed that he coded multiple times before passing away.
Smith’s sister stated that he has two children: a son who is 13 years old and a 22-year-old who he adopted. She told 11Alive that she wants the general public to understand that the Bartow County fire department has been the “biggest blessing” and that they are not at fault for what occurred.
