He spent many years working at Isto É magazine, where he signed the cartoon of the week, Avenida Brasil, which was always printed on the final page of the publication and mostly focused on Brazilian politics. He presently contributes cartoons to the Época magazine and sketches for the TV Cultura programme Roda Viva. He also performs significant work as a musician with the group Conjunto Nacional and with Histórias em Comics.

The artist, who started painting at the age of five under the influence of his grandpa, had his first newspaper appearances in the late 1960s, during the military dictatorship. His work, which is noted for its political humour and produced works like “Avenida Brazil,” was produced at this time. He gained recognition for drawing caricatures of famous Brazilians, which he did every Monday during the Roda Viva interviews, winning accolades including the So Paulo Association of Art Critics’ 1994 prize for best designer.

He attended USP between 1969 to 1976 to study architecture. He resided in a commune with 24 other hippies. According to him, it was an upscale favela. He chose to devote himself solely to cartooning and caricature, rejecting the life of an architect. Paulo performed in O Pasquim in the 1970s alongside Jaguar and Ivan Lessa. He returned to the mainstream media in the 1980s, writing for publications like Veja, Isto É, Careta, Senhor, and, in 1988, another Isto É, where he was in charge of the publication’s final page. Also, his writings may be found in specialised journals like Circo, Chiclete con Banana, and Geraldo.

In addition to focusing on musical composition and the creation of musical and theatrical productions, Paulo Caruso is also recognized for his political cartoons. Paulo, Chico, and other cartoonists established the “Muda Brazil Tancredo Jazz Band” in 1985 at the Piracicaba International Comedy Exhibition. Later, Mariano, Claudio Paiva, and Luis Fernando Verssimo joined the group. His new band, “Conjunto National,” featuring Aroeira, Luis Fernando Verssimo on saxophones, Chico Caruso on vocals, and him on piano, recently published the song “Por Seu Governo,” a musical collection of his creations.
