How did Rita O’Hare die?

Rita O’Hare, one of the beloved member of Sinn Féin passed away on March 4, 2023. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald TD stated this morning:

“I am deeply saddened to announce the death of Rita O’Hare, who died last night at her home in Dublin.

On my behalf and that of Sinn Féin, I wish to offer heartfelt condolences to Brendan and all the family.

Ireland has suffered the loss of a true patriot.

Sinn Féin has lost a talented and respected colleague, and we have all lost a very special and dear friend. “Suaimhneas siora dá hAnam,” says the Irish poet.

Who was Rita O’Hare?

Rita O’hare was the General Secretary of Sinn Féin and the Sinn Féin Representative to the United States (since 1998).

She was a high-profile fugitive Republican who served as Sinn Fein’s representative. She was born in Rita McCulloch and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

She was the daughter of a Catholic nationalist mother and a Protestant Socialist father.

Rita has a brother, Alan McCulloch. Ms. O’Hare fled to the Irish Republic in 1972 after being arrested in connection with the attempted murder of a soldier in Belfast.

She was a Civil Rights activist who later became a Republican. In the 1980s and early 1990s, she was the editor of the Irish republican newspaper An Phoblacht (“Republican News”) (AP/RN).

She was also Sinn Féin’s Director of Publicity, succeeding Danny Morrison in that position.

She is also charged with malicious wounding and possessing firearms. She was unable to return to the United Kingdom due to an outstanding arrest warrant.

Sinn Féin has made its case to the British government as one of the IRA ‘on the runs’ (OTRs) under consideration to be allowed to return to Northern Ireland.

After being released on bail, she fled to Dublin, Republic of Ireland, where she lived with her family.

Sinn Fein cause of death:

Sinn Fein announced that Ms. O’Hare died on Friday night at her home in Dublin. She was 80. Her cause of death was not disclosed by her family.

Her party confirmed this sad news on Saturday morning.

An Phoblacht also shared their condolences on the social media by paying their tribute. N Phoblacht posted following post on their social media page.

Ms. O’Hare was described as a “powerhouse within Sinn Féin and the Irish republican struggle” by party president Mary Lou McDonald.

“Rita O’Hare has been an influential republican activist and an important figure in the Irish peace process for decades,” she added.

“An integral part of the Sinn Fein leadership at important stages of the party’s development and during era-defining stages of the Peace Process, Rita worked with great drive, energy, and the ability for the unity of Ireland, for a more just society, and the cause of peace and reconciliation.”

“Ireland has lost a genuine patriot. Sinn Fein has lost a talented and valued comrade and we have all lost a very special and very dear friend.”

She mixed with Presidents and people alike and knew there was no difference. Rita spoke her mind was a living legend. Hers was definitely a ‘life well lived’ She was a loyal patriot, a loyal friend and a fierce some enemy.

The powerhouse that was Rita O’Hare has passed away. The world has lost something today. To her family, friends and wider circle we extend our condolences. Fuair Rita bas. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
