WLBT reports that the incident happened near state Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 82 on Tuesday at around 7:30 p.m.

“I have learned of an officer-involved shooting that occurred this afternoon near Reed and Rebecca Streets in Greenville. Several people were injured by gunshots, including an investigator with the Greenville Police Department who has unfortunately passed away as a result of the incident. Department of Pubic Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell has been notified and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will conduct a thorough investigation into this matter. Greenville Chief of Police Marcus Turner, Sr. and I have visited with family of the deceased officer and we asked on behalf of the family for your continued prayers, condolences, and support during this very difficult time.”

In a statement posted on the city’s Facebook page, Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons stated that “several people were hurt by bullets, including an investigator with the Greenville Police Department, who sadly lost away as a result of the incident.”

How did a Mississippi police officer die?

A male and a female were also shot in the head by the suspect, according to WLBT, which also cited law enforcement sources. According to the news source, crews airlifted the wounded suspect and the male victim to a nearby hospital for treatment.

After what is being called a significant gunfight in Greenville, one police officer is confirmed dead. Around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, it happened along Highway 1 and Highway 82.

According to law enforcement authorities, the suspect is accused of shooting a female victim in the foot and a man victim in the head. Both the suspect and the victim he is accused of the shooting have been evacuated to a hospital in Jackson.
