A gunman opened fire at Michigan State University, killing three people and injuring five more on February 13, 2023. Let’s see more about the MSU shooting and who the suspect was in detail.

MSU shooting:

The shooting happened on the Michigan State University’s (MSU) main campus located at East Lansing on Tuesday night. Four people were reported dead, with five other people critically injured.

The shooting happened at around 8:18 p.m. at Berkey Hall on the MSU campus as well as in MSU union.

Police received multiple calls about shots fired. When they got to the scene, they located multiple people shot.

Michigan State University (MSU) Police shared regular updates on social media, including the images of the suspect, who was described as a “black male, lower in stature.”

Police later made an update saying that the shooter shot himself to death kilometers away after an hourlong manhunt that forced terrified students to seek refuge in the dark.

Who is the suspect?

Police say that there is one shooter and there is longer a threat to the public.

The suspect, who killed three people and injured five others in an MSU shooting incident, was dead from self-inflicted wounds, according to the officers.

The suspect was later identified by the authorities as a 43-year-old male who had no connection to the university.

Chris Rozman, the temporary deputy chief of the university police, described the shooting as “This truly has been a nightmare we’re living tonight”

Earlier, hundreds of officers searched the East Lansing campus, roughly 145 kilometers northwest of Detroit, for the suspect. He was described as a short black male wearing red shoes, a jean jacket, and a ball cap.

His identity was not immediately disclosed, nor were any details regarding the gun or what authorities discovered at the site.

Police made the announcement of the man’s passing early on Tuesday.

The suspect’s death was confirmed four hours after gunfire erupted at Berkey Hall, an academic building, and later nearby at the MSU Union, a well-liked gathering place for eating and studying.

Police investigation:

The ATF and FBI have joined the investigation. According to Rozman, the man had no connection to Michigan State and was neither a student nor an employee.

“We have no idea why he came to campus to do this tonight.” That is part of our ongoing investigation,” the deputy chief said.

Michigan State has 50,000 students, of whom 19,000 students live on campus. All classes, sports, and other activities were canceled for 48 hours. Interim university President Teresa Woodruff said it would be a time “to think and grieve and come together.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer was briefed on the matter. After the alleged shooter passed away, the shelter-in-place order was lifted.

Governor Whitmer and other Michigan congresswomen sent their condolences. Jocelyn Benson, secretary of state for Michigan, called for stronger measures to combat gun violence after describing the occurrence as “unfathomable.”
