Hicks’ friend Holly Robinson Peete announced her death on Twitter, letting the world know that she had passed away.

When Hicks released her self-titled first album on Polydor Records in 1991, she captured our attention for the first time. She followed up “Never Been In Love Before” with “One Good Reason” and “I Got You Where I Want” later that year, and her single “Never Been In Love Before” quickly reached the top 10.

Hicks also developed into a highly sought-after supporting vocalist, travelling with both Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.

Early Life

American citizen Marva Hicks was born on May 5, 1975, in Petersburg, Virginia. She secured a contract with Polydor in the late 1980s, and Marva Hicks, her debut LP, was released in 1991.

Hicks sang in the background during the legendary Michael Jackson’s free performance at the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre in Bandar Seri Begawan on July 16, 1996.

The free performance was held to honour Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s 15th birthday. The concert was also attended by the Brunei Royal Family.

She sang the female verse of Michael Jackson’s duet “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” as part of the setlist. Sheryl Crow, Siedah Garrett, and Judith Hill are a few other singers that have collaborated with Michael Jackson on this duet.

 

Career

As the 1990s went on, Hicks put more and more of her attention on her acting career. She appeared in several live-action movies and voiced characters in animated ones while doing so. Additionally, she had many television appearances, including ones in Star Trek: Voyager and L.A. Law. Hicks continued to appear in episodes like House of Cards and Madam Secretary as the number of television programmes increased in the 2010s.

In stageplays, Hicks actually found a lasting home. She played the lead in the Broadway and off-Broadway productions of The Lion King, Motown the Musical, The Wiz, and numerous more plays.

Marva Hicks wasn’t well-known, but she was a really skilled performer who was excellent in almost all forms of entertainment and delighted audiences in all of them.
