The two were close friends for the rest of McDole’s life. When Nelson was a walk-on defensive back for the Bulldogs and McDole was the team’s top wide receiver, they first got to know one another.

Before retiring to the Florida Panhandle, Nelson, a long-time and wildly successful football coach at various institutions in Alabama and Mississippi, stated,

“If I could describe Mardye McDole as a football player to the average person, here’s what I would say — if you were playing football on a playground, he looked like an eighth-grader playing against third-graders,”  “… If we threw the football out of the wishbone back then, everybody knew who it was going to.”

McDole extended his success from his second year into successful junior and senior seasons. 1980 saw McDole named an All-American by the Sporting News during his senior year.

McDole finished his career at Mississippi State as the school’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards (2,214). (116). Only Chad Bumphis and Fred Ross had more receiving yards in their careers than he does. Up to the 2022 season, McDole remained in the MSU Top 10 for catches in a career.

During his time in Starkville, McDole started his professional career after the Minnesota Vikings selected him in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft. McDole played for the Vikings for three seasons before moving on to play for the Memphis Showboats of the USFL and the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL.
