Who was Johnny Fean?

Johnny Fean grew up in Shannon, County Clare, and the city of Limerick. He quickly learned the harmonica, guitar, banjo, and mandolin. He participated in sessions in County Clare and Limerick when he was a teenager.

As his listening preferences evolved from rock to blues, Fean incorporated them into his playing style. Along with Eugene Wallace and Joe O’Donnell, who played electric fiddle, he was a member of the Sweet Street band in his late teens.

Later, he was a member of the rock and blues group Jeremiah Henry. Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton were his musical heroes. In 1970, he parted ways with Jeremiah Henry to resume playing traditional music in Limerick.

Horslips, a renowned Irish Celtic rock band, was founded in 1970, and Fean joined soon after. The group went on to release singles including “Dearg Doom” and “Trouble With a Capital T.”

They were one of the most popular Irish-based bands of all time and will undoubtedly be remembered as having had a significant forming impact on the Irish rock scene.

Irish Celtic rock band Horslips typically draws inspiration for their songwriting, song arrangements, and live performances from traditional Irish airs, jigs, and reels. The band is known as the “founding fathers of Celtic rock” for fusing traditional Irish music with rock music. They later served as an inspiration for several national and international performers.

The Zen Alligators were established in 1980 by Johnny Fean, Eamon Carr, and two other people before Horslips dissolved. They recorded many singles and performed pure rock and soul on the Irish circuit. Fean, O’Connor, and Carr made together another offshoot group called Host. In 1984, they released one album, Tryal, as well as two singles. The Last Bandits in the World (1986) was the final album produced by Fean and Carr in the 1980s.

Johnny Fean relocated to England in 1986. Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth played in the English indie band Jacobites from 1983 until 1986. Johnny played guitar on Ragged School, their 1986 album. Additionally, he occasionally performed with The Treat, a three-piece pick-up band that occasionally featured former Thin Lizzy guitarist Eric Bell in place of Fean, and a Horslips tribute band called Spirit of Horslips.

The original lineup of Barry, Johnny, and Jim, together with Ray Fean (drums), performed two shows at Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival on May 11 and 12, 2019—the 11th and 12th of Charles’ musical career—in Custom House Square. ‘Barry Devlin, Johnny Fean, & Jim Lockhart from Horslips’ was used in the advertisements for the performances.
