Super Sky Point to Stuart Margolin, who made Angel such a memorable and endearing character on The Rockford Files. I hope his first act in the hereafter is to call his old pal Jimmy and tell him he’s in trouble and needs his help. And may old friends be together again. #RIP pic.twitter.com/5mycPoTxPP

Who was Stuart Margolin?
Stuart Margolin was an American film, theater, and television actor and director.
His Early Life
Margolin was born in Davenport, Iowa, on January 31, 1940. He was a small boy when his family relocated to Dallas, Texas.
Margolin has claimed to have had a “hoodlum” childhood, to have been expelled from Texas public schools, and to have had his parents send him to a boarding school in Tennessee. His family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, while he was a student .
When Margolin was discharged from reform school and relocated with his family, he made the decision to return to visit his pals in Dallas. His parents set up a private school there for him to attend.
Television
Margolin played the recurring role of Evelyn “Angel” Martin on The Rockford Files, Jim Rockford’s (James Garner) shady friend and former cellmate, whose various scams and schemes frequently landed Rockford in hot water.

In the Western television series Nichols (1971–1972), where he costarred with Garner, Margolin played a character of the Angel character from The Rockford Files. It only had one season of that program.
Periodically, Rockford would pay Angel to “hit the streets” and gather data that would aid in solving a case.
As Co-writer
One of the earliest motion pictures to deal with the issue of Vietnam veterans “coming home” was The Ballad of Andy Crocker, an ABC television movie that Margolin co-wrote and co-produced in 1969.
He co-wrote the movie’s theme song and appeared uncredited in the movie. Heroes, a different narrative about Vietnam veterans coping with what we now regard to as PTSD, included Margolin in an uncredited performance as the Station Wagon Driver.
In the 1976 film Lanigan’s Rabbi, based on the Harry Kemelman mystery novel series, Margolin played Rabbi David Small.
Small was portrayed by Bruce Solomon in the brief-lived TV series of the same name that debuted in 1977 as part of The NBC Sunday Mystery Movie, but he was unable to continue the role due to scheduling issues.
As Actor
Margolin and Alan Alda collaborated on screen for the first time since Margolin’s stint on M*A*S*H in 1974 in a May 2009 episode of 30 Rock.

In the Canadian CBC Television series Republic of Doyle’s episode The Overpass (Season 5 Episode 2; 2013), which was also influenced by The Rockford Files, Margolin played bail jumper Stanley Wescott.
The Stanley Wescott part shared many characteristics with the Angel Martin character even though it wasn’t a complete reproduction.
Big Charlie Archer was portrayed in the episode by Margolin’s stepson Max Martini. Kelly’s Heroes, Death Wish, Futureworld, The Big Bus, and S.O.B. are just a few of the movies that featured Margolin.
Margolin appeared in episodes of the television series,
- M*A*S*H ,
- The Partridge Family ,
- That Girl.
- The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda, an episode of Land of the Giants
- Twelve O’Clock High
- The Monkees
- Love, American Style
- The Fall Guy
- Magnum, P.I., Hill Street Blues
- Touched by an Angel (“With God as My Witness”).

Awards
One of only five actors to get this honor twice for the same part is Margolin, who won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for this performance in 1979 and 1980.
He directed the movie Salt Water Moose, which won him the 1996 DGA Award for children’s programming. He was nominated for the same award once more for directing The Sweetest Gift in 1998.

Sad to learn of the passing of Stuart Margolin. Had the good fortune to work with him as both an actor and a director on the Showtime series Beggars and Choosers in the 90s. RIP.https://t.co/IoGQEAoDt4

One of the worst things anyone can go through in life is losing a loved one. Any journey must have a destination at the end. The person’s time on earth has regrettably come to an end now that they have died.
We wish him eternal peace and send our thoughts and prayers to his loved ones, family, friends. May he rest in peace.
