Kartner received a request to write a promotional song for The Smurfs in May 1977. Because the record company was dubious of the single’s potential, they initially only pressed 1,000 copies of “The Smurf Song.”
However, at a Schlager festival, they were all purchased in a single day. 400,000 singles were swiftly sold following a repress. Then, a whole Smurfs record was made, and 500,000 copies of it were sold.
