Who was Just Fontaine?
He was born in Marrakech in 1933 while Morocco was still part of the French Empire and had a Spanish mother but chose to represent France during his international career.
Just Fontaine is the record holder for most goals scored in a single World Cup. Before an injury ended his career, he had an incredible record for Les Blues, scoring 30 goals in 21 games between 1953 and 1960.
Fontaine played for USM Casablanca, Nice, and Stade Reims during his club career. He won the French Super Cup with Reims, the Coupe de France, and the French First Division four times in total.
After retiring from football in 1962, aged 28, he went on to have a career in management, briefly holding the role of France boss in 1967. He went on to take the reins of Luchon, PSG, and Toulouse before taking over the Moroccan national team where he lead the Atlas Lions to third place in the 1980 African Cup of Nations.

Just Fontaine died on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday at the age of 89, in Toulouse. The legendary striker scored 13 times in six matches at the 1958 World Cup as France made it to third place.
Fontaine was then forced to retire in 1962 at the age of just 28 after he suffered a double leg fracture.

A great sadness to learn of the death of Just Fontaine, former OGC Nice player, and legend of the Blues and the Reims Stadium.
With 13 goals in the same World Cup final, in Sweden in 1958, a record today still unbeaten, and his title of top scorer in L1 for four consecutive seasons, his contribution to football history will have been exceptional.
An outstanding playing career coupled with that of an outstanding football coach and manager. Just Fontaine will forever remain in our memories as one of the greatest football players of all time.
My thoughts are with his family, friends, and former teammates.
