Harry White, a rider who won the Melbourne Cup four times, has passed away at age 78. Late on Friday night, Victoria Racing Club paid tribute to White, one of Australia’s best jockeys.

With his victories on Think Big (1974–75), Arwon (1978), and Hyperno (1979), White joined Bobbie Lewis as the Melbourne Cup’s most successful jockey.

White won the W.S. Cox Plate, the Newmarket Handicap three times, the Australian Cup five times, the Caulfield Cup twice, and the W.S. In a distinguished 35-year career, White won 60 Group 1 races, winning the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership four times.

In 2003, White was honored with a place in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. In a statement, VRC president Neil Wilson praised White. Harry had a great knack for calming horses down and getting them to give their best performance, according to Wilson.

He competed at Flemington during the height of the sport’s jockeying heyday and became one of the most popular and successful riders to ever compete there.

Through most of the late 1960s and early 1970s, he shared a friendly rivalry with Roy Higgins, which produced one of the greatest finishes in the Melbourne Cup in 1979, when Harry on Hyperno just barely beat Roy on Salamander.

“He was adored by everyone in racing and had a close relationship with the renowned trainers Bart Cummings, George Hanlon, and Angus Armanasco, all of whom are fellow inductees into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.

Harry White established the Harry White Trust to help those in the racing industry who are in need as a result of his popularity, which followed him into retirement.

Dean, Brent, and Karen’s children receive sympathy from the VRC.

White will get recognition from the VRC throughout the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Who was Harry White?

Harry White, an Australian jockey, lived from 1944 to October 21, 2022. Particularly in the 1970s, he was among the best jockeys in the nation. He typically rode for Bart Cummings, known as the “cups king.” He rode the winners of four Melbourne Cups, including Arwon for George Hanlon, Think Big (twice), and Hyperno for Cummings.

No matter how significant the race, White was known for his judgment in long-distance competitions and for sleeping in the jockeys’ room before riding. Three Newmarket Handicaps, three Oakleigh Plates, and three Futurity Stakes victories are among his sprinting accomplishments.

After retiring in 1995, White settled on a 200-hectare beef farm outside of Gisborne, Victoria, where he lived with his wife Lauris, and their three children, Karen, Dean, and Brent.

When Lauris passed away in 2012, White, who had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2003, sold the farm where Think Big and Hyperno were buried and gave his cups and other racing artifacts to the Victoria Racing Club Racing Museum. On October 21, 2022, White passed away at the age of 78.
