The Greenfields’ vocalist Carmen Tanti, a Maltese folk revival band, dies. Let’s see what happened to her and Carmen Tanti cause of death in detail.

What happened to Carmen Tanti?

At the age of 75, a distinctive harmony singer who co-founded The Greenfields with her husband Joe Tanti passes away. The Greenfields, a Maltese folk band, lost their singer Carmen Tanti recently. She was 75. She had two children, Clive and Mayra, with her co-singer husband Joe Tanti, with whom she was married.

Very saddened by the news of the demise of Carmen Tanti of the popular folk band The Greenfields. I did not know her personally though I did bump into her and her husband Joe many times when I used to play at various tourist venues. Rest in Peace.

Who was Carmen Tanti?

The Tanti and co-singer and guitarist Charles Bajada created The Greenfields three years before getting married in 1973. Since then, The Greenfields’ sound and singing style have become a mainstay of modern Maltese folk music, partly due to the folk resurgence of the early 1970s.

The Greenfields have broadcast live to Maltese audiences on Television Malta thanks to the improbable success of a “folk music-themed” mass at the Little Sister of the Poor chapel in Hamrun.

Fr. Charles Movement, the leader of the Cana Movement, subsequently invited the group to his Good Friday broadcast, Djalogu, which resulted in The Greenfields’ debut on television on March 6, 1970.

After that, the group’s regular appearance on Maltese television resulted from Carmen Tanti’s voice, which is similar to Judith Durham of The Australian Seekers.

Following their appearance on Ittra Ittra, they were awarded a regular spot on Favoriti, Folklobeat, Malteen, and Karusell, as well as Galenija.

The Greenfields would be known for their unique blend of traditional gana-style songs and modern folk music, which resulted in songs like “Il-Karrozzin,” “Il-Vapur tal-Art,” “It-Terramaxka,” and “Il-Lift Tal-Barrakk,” among others. These songs all refer to a slowly disappearing past and portray extinct Maltese customs.

Rolf Harris, Italina stars Albana and Romina Power, and Ivana Spagna, Italian TV dancer Don Lurio, British pop band Brotherhood Of Man, as well as Raffaella Carrà in her four shows in Malta in 1977, as well as The Platters during their Malta performance in 1978, were all cabaret regulars with The Greenfields.

When Charles Bajada unexpectedly left the group in 1990—he passed away that year—the Tantis continued their musical adventure as a folk couple.
