Henry McDonald, a well-known author and journalist, has passed away. The 57-year-old father of three passed away on Sunday in a hospital in his hometown of Belfast. He had been ill for some time.
McDonald supported the English Premier League team Everton as well as the Northern Irish football team Cliftonville. From his marriage, he had two daughters and a son. Henry McDonald was a Northern Irish journalist and author. He served as a journalist for The Guardian and Observer and, beginning in 2021, served as political editor of Belfast-based The News Letter, one of Northern Ireland’s major daily newspapers. McDonald published a lot of writing about the Troubles and related topics. He was up in South Belfast’s Irish nationalist Markets neighborhood and went to St. Malachy’s College. McDonald previously belonged to the Workers’ Party, a left-leaning organization connected to the Official IRA that split out from Sinn Féin in the early 1970s.
Early in the 1980s, he visited the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) with the SFWP’s youth wing. He wrote extensively about paramilitary organizations in Northern Ireland, such as the Irish National Liberation Army and Ulster Defense Association (UDA) (INLA). He co-authored the INLA-related book INLA – Deadly Divisions with Jack Holland, who is now deceased. The book was initially released in 1994, and since then, it has been updated and reprinted. Along with co-authoring books on the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and UDA with Jim Cusack, McDonald also wrote on paramilitary organizations that are loyal to Ulster.
A biography of Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leader David Trimble, a biography of himself titled Colors: Ireland – From Bombs to Boom, and Martin McGuinness: A Life Remembered were also written by him. He served as the BBC’s Belfast security correspondent for a while. He edited the youth sections while working as a staff reporter for Belfast’s The Irish News during the 1990s. The Swinging Detective, his debut book, was published in 2017. He collaborated with Merrion Press to publish his second book, Two Souls, in September 2019.
