Who was Gregory Allen Howard?

Gregory Allen Howard was an American screenwriter and producer.

He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1952. His family frequently relocated because of his stepfather’s job in the Navy. After graduating from Princeton University with a degree in American history, Howard worked for Merrill Lynch on Wall Street for a short period before relocating to Los Angeles in his mid-twenties to pursue a literary career.

In addition to working as a story editor for Where I Live and the 1990 FOX series True Colors, Howard also worked as a freelance writer and as a writer on several television projects.

Career

Tinseltown Trilogy, a theatre drama by Howard, was another success. The three one-act pieces in the Tinseltown Trilogy, which is about three guys in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve, are interconnected and are all performed as one. When it came time to create the original screenplay for the Muhammad Ali biopic, Howard was selected. Howard learned about the 1971 TC Williams Titans after completing the first draught and returning to his native Virginia.

His first major motion picture, Ali, was not released until after his subsequent screenplay, Remember the Titans, as a result of studio holdups and rewrites. Gregory Allen Howard created the spec script Remember the Titans after learning the extraordinary tale of the integrated high school football team that Alexandria, Virginia, credited with fostering good racial relations in the community.

The script was built on a lot of research, including conversations with Coaches Herman Boone and Bill Yoast, although Howard initially had trouble getting it released. In the end, Jerry Bruckheimer agreed to direct the movie. Remember the Titans, which starred Denzel Washington and Will Patton, became a big success at the box office, earning more than $100 million domestically.

Howard worked on many additional films following the debut of Remember the Titans and Ali. He contributed uncredited writing to the 2006 sports drama Glory Road, which followed Texas Western coach Don Haskins as he led the school’s first all-black starting lineup to the NCAA championship in 1966. In 2004, Howard and Morgan Freeman collaborated on the script for a movie based on the 761st Tank Battalion, the first black armored unit to participate in World War II combat.

In 2006, Ridley Scott was chosen to direct the screenplay Factor X, which Howard also penned. The screenplay for Howard’s film, Night Witches, about the Soviet Airwomen during the Great Patriotic War was finished in 2014. The film was funded by Boris Yeltsin’s grandson.

In 2019, Howard produced and authored the screenplay for Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet, a story he felt so passionately about. After studying Harriet Tubman as a history major at Princeton University, he previously stated that the story had been in the works for more than 20 years. He recalled how her story had touched him and given him the idea to adapt it into an action adventure film. Howard said to THR at the Harriet red carpet premiere,

“What I waited for more than anything else is for the whole industry to change. There needed to be the #OscarsSoWhite and [more] diversity in Hollywood. All that had to happen, because anybody who greenlighted this movie was risking their job and/or career.”

Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monáe, and Leslie Odom Jr. starred in the movie, which received two Oscar nominations. In an interview with Focus Features in 2019 regarding what the film meant to him, Howard said,

“For me, this film is my valentine to Black women. I wanted them to be able to go to the movies on Saturday and see this young Black woman take on this incredible power structure and triumph over it.”

Power to the People, a script written by Howard for the Black Panther Party, was purchased by Paramount Pictures on November 12, 2019, with George Tillman Jr. in negotiations to direct and Ben Affleck producing.
