Former label co-owner Joe Carducci confirmed the news and shared it on Facebook,
“SPOT – “Glen M. Lockett” (1951-2023)I hate to type out the words but… SPOT passed away after 10am today/Saturday (Mar. 4, 2023) at Morningside Healthcare in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. His nurse told me he woke up alright but later showed no pulse and several attempts to revive him failed.”

Glenn Michael Lockett ,also known as Spot, was an American record producer. He was instrumental in building his image as a top-tier music producer during his tenure as house producer and engineer at the influential independent punk label SST Records. He and his older sister Cynthia were raised in a privileged neighborhood in Hollywood. In the middle of the 1970s, Lockett relocated from Hollywood to Hermosa Beach, where he met Greg Ginn while working at Garden of Eden, a place that served vegetarian food. At Easy Reader, Lockett also wrote record reviews as a freelancer under the pen name Spot. Ginn and Spot were friends while Spot played bass for Panic, a band that would later change its name to Black Flag.
One of Spot’s first loves was jazz. He said in an interview with Red Bull Music Academy,
“I’d been raised listening to post-bebop jazz,”
“Going back into the ’50s, I’d be at family barbecues where they’re playing Thelonious Monk, and stuff like that.”
“I was really enamored with a lot of what I guess you would call progressive rock. That whole era with concept albums, when jazz fusion started happening, before it turned into bullshit.”
Between 1979 and 1986, Spot recorded, mixed, produced, or coproduced the majority of SST’s important performers. Black Flag, Minutemen, Mood of Defiance, Meat Puppets, Hüsker Dü, Saint Vitus, Misfits (Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood), and Descendents are just a few of the noteworthy bands that have his name on their albums. Spot relocated to Austin, Texas, after leaving SST in 1986. The spot was a skilled photographer who put out a book titled Sounds of Two Eyes Opening including his photographs. His images were displayed in a gallery setting in 2018 at the Pacific Coast Gallery in Hermosa Beach.

“RIP Spot. He recorded iconic LPs by Black Flag, Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, Descendents, Meat Puppets and the Misfits, among many others. He was also an excellent critic, photographer and musician. But most importantly, a lot of people loved him.”
