Who was George Williams?

George Williams was the head girls’ coach at Hillside High School from 1988 to 1997. During that time, he had five seasons with 20 wins or more, six trips to the state playoffs, three conference championships, three sectional championships, a regional championship, and a state championship. Williams also taught in the Durham Public Schools. Williams was selected as the 4-A State Championship Coach and was a three-time PAC Coach of the Year.

NCCU graduate Williams, who served as an assistant coach for the Eagles for seven seasons from 2002 to 2009, returned to the women’s basketball program as a volunteer for the 2022–23 campaign. When NCCU earned its final league championship in school history—the CIAA title in 2006–07—he was serving as associate head coach.

The four-sport star at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, also served as a coach at Hillside for girls’ track, wrestling, and football. Williams also served as a coach at Fayetteville State University and E.E. Smith High School. Williams was an all-conference punter and tight end while playing football at NCCU. When the Eagles won the MEAC title again in 1973, he was a member of the squad and worked as a graduate assistant coach.
