Garry Adey passed away at 78

Garry Adey, a former player for the Leicester Tigers, has passed away. Adey made his Leicester Tigers debut in a 14-6 victory over Loughborough Colleges in March 1967. He went on to play in 381 games for the team.

Throughout his fourteen-year playing career, he scored 57 tries. His final game was against Gosforth at Twickenham in 1981.

Adey, who was dubbed “industrious” on the pitch, started in the club’s three straight John Player Cup championship victories from 1979 to 1981. He received two England caps, both of which came in 1976’s Five Nations tournament.

Adey had committee positions with Leicester Tigers after his playing days, and he served as a non-executive director of the organization. He was also heavily involved in the renovation of the North Stand at Mattioli Woods Welford Road.

Who was Garry Adey?

Garry John Adey, a former English rugby union No. 8 for the Leicester Tigers and England was born on June 13, 1945. On Wednesday, March 8, 1967, at Welford Road, Adey made his debut for the Leicester Tigers in a 14-6 victory over Loughborough Colleges.

Career Highlights

Adey played the position of lock for the remainder of the season and the two following seasons, appearing just 28 times in all. Adey switched to the number 8 position in 1969, scoring tries in victories over Fylde and Moseley.

By the end of the season, having played in 20 of the final 26 games, he had cemented his position as Leicester’s top number 8. Adey earned his two England international caps in 1976. He participated in the last round against France after making his Twickenham debut on March 6, 1976, against Ireland.

He participated in every game as Leicester advanced to the club’s first-ever national final, the 1977–78 John Player Cup final when they fell to Gloucester 6-3.

Adey was once again a cup constant in 1979, scoring tries in both the second-round victory over Broughton Park and the first-round victory over the Northampton Saints. Tigers defeated Moseley 15-12 to claim their first national cup, and Adey began the match.

He missed the semi-final in 1980 but made up for it in the final, defeating London Irish 21-9, to win his third straight cup. Adey participated in a tour to Australia and Fiji to mark Leicester’s centenary after 1980 final, when he competed against Queensland Reds and a Fijian Chairman’s XV.

Adey announced his retirement in November 1980 after suffering an ankle injury against Cambridge University. He later came back, however, due to injuries to other players, to play the season’s final three games, including a fourth consecutive final and third victory. This time, Gosforth was defeated 22–15.
