Anthony Varvaro accident: What happened? Cause of death Revealed

Who was Anthony Varvaro?

Varvaro, 37, was an officer for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.  Prior to a six-year major league career as a reliever with the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, and Boston Red Sox, he played baseball at St. John’s.

“His dream was always to be a cop,” he said. “He had a plan.”

 

What happened to Anthony Varvaro?

According to police authorities and his former teams, Anthony Varvaro, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who retired in 2016 to work as a police officer in the New York City region, was killed in a car accident on his way to work on Sunday morning at the Sept. 11 memorial event in Manhattan.

Varvaro’s passing was confirmed by the Braves on Sunday afternoon.

 

Condolences from St. John’s coach

Mike Hampton, the baseball coach for St. John’s, expressed his “wordlessness” over Varvaro’s passing.

Hampton, who served as Varvaro’s assistant coach at St. John’s for all three of his seasons there, claimed that the player was “everything you could want in a guy in addition to a ballplayer.” My thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and other fellow officers.

 

From Port Authority Police Department

In a statement, representatives of the Port Authority also expressed their condolences.

The statement read: “On this solemn date, as the Port Authority mourns the death of 84 employees in the World Trade Center attacks — including 37 members of the Port Authority Police Department — our grief only deepens today with the departure of Officer Varvaro.

 

Cause of accident

A law enforcement source with firsthand knowledge of the collision told Daily Voice that a wrong-way driver was to blame.

The crash’s details have not yet been made public.

Career

Varvaro, a native of Staten Island, started playing baseball professionally in 2020 with the Seattle Mariners, garnering the moniker “Little Pedro Martinez.”

Prior to beginning his career in law enforcement, he played for the Atlanta Braves for four seasons before finishing his career with the Boston Red Sox. He retired from baseball in December 2016.

Varvaro was also very active in the neighbourhood. This past April, he was elected president of the Snug Harbor Little League on Staten Island.

The league said on social media Sunday afternoon, “A guy that represented all that is wonderful in child sports, he will be long lost. Words cannot explain the pain that is losing [him].

Please remember Anthony’s family in your prayers and remember that he was a wonderful man in addition to being the president.

Varvaro was described as “a true gentleman and great family man” by the Staten Island Baseball Oldtimers, who gave him their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. They also said that he was “always willing to help the Staten Island sports community in any way he could. He helped us run youth clinics and always had a smile on his face.

Varvaro leaves behind his wife Kerry, his kids, as well as a large number of relatives, friends, and loved ones.

From 2011 until 2014, Varvaro pitched for the Braves.
