This sad news was announced by Diego Raymundo in the following social media statement,
“We regret to announce the passing of Yukiko Takayama, the screenwriter of the film Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) and author of the novel 2075: Meister Titano’s Counterattack (2016) a sequel novel to the 1975 film. Yukiko was the only woman to write a film of Godzilla in the almost 70 years of the franchise. RIP”
Who was Yukiko Takayama?
Yukiko was a well-known screenwriter and film director from Japan. Tokyo-born Yukiko Takayama was born in 1940. She was the daughter of Nihonga painter Tatsuo Takayama.
She attended the Scenario Centre, a vocational school for screenwriters while working as a housewife after earning her degree in letters from Keio University.
After winning Ishir Honda’s Godzilla script competition for students at screenwriting schools, Takayama made her debut as a screenwriter in 1975 with Terror of Mechagodzilla, the fifteenth installment in the Godzilla saga.
Yukiko was the first female main staff member of the franchise. She later contributed to the screenplay for the 1977 animated film Monarch: The Big Bear of Tallac.
She contributed writing to the 30th season of the Hissatsu television series, Hissatsu Shigotonin (1979–1981), as well.
Additonally, she worked on many movies such as “Tsukiyama”, “Tono Monogatari”, “Mayuki Kuraba”, and TV dramas such as the period drama “Hissatsu Series”.
She is also the director of movies such as “Musume Dojoji: Love of Hebien”. She also wrote novels, and “The Tale of Genji, a Thousand-Year Mystery” was made into a movie.

Yukiko Takayama, the screenwriter of the 1975 film Terror of Mechagodzilla, passed suddenly on June 2 at 11:16 a.m. in her home in Tokyo due to natural causes. She was 83 years old. Yukiko Takayama cause of death was natural.
Her oldest son Naoki announced that her funeral will be held on June 12, at 11:00 a.m. at Koyasan Tokyo Betsuin on 3-15-18 in Takanawa, Minato-ku.
