Hayden Panettiere is ready to explain why she agreed to give up custody of her 7-year-old daughter Kaya.
The Scream actress, who has previously spoken about her issues with opiate and alcohol addiction, recently revealed that there was “no talk” between her and her Ukraine-based ex Wladimir Klitschko about his receiving full custody in 2018.
“If he had come to me and said, ‘I think because of where you’re at right now and your troubles, it would be good for her to be over here with me for a bit,’ to which I would’ve probably answered, ‘Okay. that makes sense,’

” Hayden elaborated on a recent Red Table Talk episode. “I understand. I’ll go there to visit and do other things.”
But that was not the case. “It was quite disturbing because of how it was done,” she added. “I mean, signing those documents was the most devastating thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.”
Hayden told hosts Jada Pinkett Smith, Adrienne Norris, and Kelly Osbourne that the “documents were to give him complete custody.”
“I was going to go work on myself, I was going to get better, and when I got better, things could change and she could come to me, and I could have my time with her,” she added, “but that didn’t happen.”

After Hayden and Wladimir divorced in 2018, the Nashville actress made the difficult decision to send Kaya to live with her father in Ukraine while she recovered from postpartum depression and alcohol and drug addiction.
“It was the most difficult thing I’d ever done,” she told People in July 2022. “But the best thing I could do for my kid was to make sure she was okay, to take care of myself, and to be a good mom to her.”And that sometimes means letting go.”

Hayden was eventually admitted to rehab for eight months and has subsequently finished trauma therapy and inpatient treatment. She is now preparing a comeback as an actress, having recently been signed by talent agency APA and having just concluded filming Scream 6, in which she reprises her role as Kirby Reed.
“This hasn’t been easy, and there have been many ups and downs,” Hayden said to People. “However, I don’t regret even the most heinous things that have happened to me.” I feel tremendously accomplished. And I feel like I’ve been given a second opportunity.”
