When parents, teachers, and students yelled in terror and fled across the field, at least seven bullets can be heard in the footage that was then recorded. 13-year-old Bobby Holloman, who captured the clip, was hailed as a “hero” by his present teacher Don Weller. In the video, Holloman is seen approaching Weller and telling him to duck to avoid danger. Before the stunned teacher could ask what had happened, he yelled, “Get down, Mr. Weller,” before simply responding, “Gun,” to the question.
What happened at the scene?
Middle school students were gathered on the playing field after a game on Wednesday night, November 16, when they heard gunshots, prompting some to drop to the ground while others ran for their lives. A 41-year-old mother of one of the players was reportedly shot in the parking lot outside the ground and airlifted to UNC Medical Center, where she was being treated for life-threatening injuries at the time of publication. The shooting took place at around 8 pm on Wednesday, November 16, after a middle school championship game between Lumberton Junior High and St. Paul’s Middle School, when the players were being awarded trophies.
When Holloman realized his teammate’s mother had been shot, his mother, Linda Renee Tomei, 46, who was also at the game, said her son broke down in tears. According to Tomei, “I simply heard a pop, pop, pop.” “I didn’t know where the firing was coming from, and my child was there in an open field, so it was frightening.” She said, “With regard to my kid,” “He found it to be really frightening, but he performed well. He had been sobbing because he was upset. Although the victim’s identity has not been made public, the police reported that the attacker was dressed entirely in black. Another video taken from the viewing area on the field shows Holloman filming near the middle of the field before sprinting at Weller.
Holloman’s Statement
Holloman told WRBL that “it was overwhelming.” “All I could think about was getting to safety. You are not guaranteed tomorrow, and anything can happen in a matter of seconds. The student told WRAL that as she thought back on the tumultuous scene, “That’s correct, so before I sat down, I wanted to make sure everyone else was alright. I think that’s accurate.” Weller praised Holloman for his deeds. “He helped me stand up and get to the fence while advising me to keep my feet on the ground. It helped me feel a little more in control and less anxious
“The instructor spoke to the media. Holloman, a defensive back for his school, claimed that shortly prior to the gunshots, his team had been celebrating their triumph.
“We were talking about how we’re ready to get the trophy and how it’s going to feel,” he recalled. “But it didn’t feel like we won a championship after what had happened.”
Investigation On Process
The St Paul’s Bulldogs defeated the Vikings of Lumberton Junior High 38–24. The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the ATF, North Carolina ALE, NC Highway Patrol, Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, and Lumberton Police Department.
Students were told that the awards event will be rescheduled by Tre Britt, a member of the Robeson County School Board.The football players from Lumberton Junior and St. Paul’s Middle “fought hard to reach that stage and they will be honored for their efforts with a trophy presentation,” the speaker stated. Coach Quentin Gore has now confirmed that no coaches or players were hurt in the shooting.
