The 27-year-old, who won the US Open, contacted his former partner Deniz Khazaniuk, who stays in war-torn Ukraine and still has family in Lviv.

“She was telling me about her gran who had a couple of strokes recently and can scarcely walk, so she couldn’t go anyplace,” Fitzpatrick told Sportsmail in March.

“Then she told me about her uncle, who had just packed his belongings and was leaving for battle the next day.

“I was sitting in Florida, ready to practice, when the contrast between the fact that he would never return and what I do struck me.”

Fitzpatrick, who has risen to No. 18 in the world after top-10 finishes at the Phoenix Open and the Pebble Beach pro-am, stated that the situation in Ukraine has changed his perspective on tournaments.

“I’d already chosen to be a little easier on myself this year and enjoy what I have,” he added, “but that phone conversation simply reinforced the fact that I don’t want to spend the rest of my life worrying about winning golf tournaments.”
