About Volkan Kahraman

Born in Vienna to a family of Turkish immigrants, the footballer retired in 2010 after playing several years for lower-league Austrian clubs.

The former midfielder, considered at the end of the 1990s as one of the great promises of football in Austria, began his professional career at Feyenoord Rotterdam, at just 17 years of age.

Kahraman went through the last phase of his youth academy at Feyenoord, for which he played one match in the main squad. Trainer Leo Beenhakker had him fill in in November 1997 at the age of seventeen in the final phase of the Eredivisie match with De Graafschap.

Kahraman was licensed by Feyenoord to Excelsior, local team who competed in the Eerste Divisie, for the next two seasons.  The midfielder from Kralingen played 63
games for the team and scored five goals during that period.

He was transferred in 1998 to Excelsior Rotterdam, also in the Dutch top division, where he played three seasons after failing to establish himself in the Dutch club team.

After playing for Pasching in the Austrian Bundesliga for two successful seasons, Kahraman was selected for the national squad of Austria, for whom he appeared in three games in 2002.

In 2017, Kahraman stood in the parliamentary elections as a candidate for the Austrian People’s Party ÖVP, although he was not elected as an MP.

Club Career and Career Journey

The Austro-Turk chose an unusual route and started his professional career in the Netherlands. He made his debut with Feyenoord and later transferred to Excelsior, a rival team in the same city. After a brief stint in Turkey, he returned to his native country in 2001, where he made his breakthrough at ASK Pasching. After finishing the 2001–2002 season with the team in the second division, he was promoted to the Bundesliga. Shortly after, in August 2002, he made his debut for the national team, for which he played three times up until November of that same year.

In January 2003, Kahraman went to Wiener Austria, where he celebrated his greatest career success by winning the Bundesliga championship at the end of the season. He then played for Austria Salzburg, LASK, and again for Pasching before his professional career ended in 2006 at the age of 26 with a move to the Ostliga in Schwadorf. After his playing days, Kahraman also worked as a trainer in said league, for Simmering and Karabakh, among others. Most recently, he trained Ostbahn until the end of last season.
