At the age of 18, he founded and operated Stratosphere in Morningside, the city’s first skater-owned skateboard store, before moving it to Little Five Points. Thomas, an accomplished skateboarder since the age of 8, had a significant impact on the growth of the skating community in Atlanta. The International Olympic Committee practiced the skate performance for the closing ceremony on Thomas’ improvised skate ramp in 1996, in the lead-up to the Atlanta Games.

In 2015, he created the documentary Lost in Transition, which tells the story of how he and his pals started the Southern skateboarding heritage and highlights their DIY attitude of “do it yourself, let’s ride.” Thomas evolved Stratosphere into more than a skateboard shop – it is a community center and gathering place, supporting and hosting various skateboard events, charity fundraisers, and exclusive product releases. Also, he supported the Stratosphere Skateboard Team, which frequently served as an Atlanta skating talent incubator. Thomas was a devoted supporter of the Little Five Points neighborhood and its businesses. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Sk8ter Aid charity event for the treatment of juvenile brain cancer.

The Old Fourth Ward Skatepark on the Eastside Beltline was built by Thomas, who was also a skilled construction manager. Thomas designed and built a number of public and private skate ramps. He also provided advice to the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Atlanta. Thomas’ family was the most meaningful part of his life. The joy in his life came from his mother and the three kids he had with his first wife, Rachael Taylor. He was well-known for his charismatic demeanor, friendliness, and kindness. Thomas’ beloved family and circle of friends will miss him terribly.
